Season 5 of The Boys is quickly proving why it’s one of Prime Video’s top shows, and the first episode includes a fun connection to another popular Amazon series. Picking up right after the dramatic ending of Season 4, the new season immediately throws viewers back into the intense battle against Homelander. Even with the stakes higher than ever, the show still manages to deliver the witty humor and pop culture references it’s known for. In the premiere, there’s a quick nod to the series Reacher. (Spoiler alert: the following discusses episodes 1 and 2 of Season 5.)
The final episode of The Boys, titled “Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite,” starts with a dangerous situation: Homelander plans to kill Hughie, Frenchie, and Mother’s Milk, who are being held captive in one of his camps. He hopes this will force Starlight and Butcher to come rescue them. His plan works – Butcher and Starlight immediately begin plotting a rescue mission. To get inside the camp, they’ll need help from a superpowered individual known as The Worm, who can dig tunnels.
When Butcher visits The Worm, we find out he’s struggling in the declining television industry—and amusingly, he’s actually writing a script for Reacher. He’s working on a scene involving a motel, where a woman comments on Jack Reacher’s size, and he responds with a suggestive line. (Given that this is The Boys, we’ll let you imagine what happens next.)
The show playfully acknowledges its fellow Prime Video hit, confirming that the world of Reacher and The Boys are connected. This isn’t the only clever reference in the opening episode; Mother’s Milk jokes to Hughie that his past experiences are mild in comparison to their current situation, referencing the Netflix series Emily in Paris. This suggests that Emily in Paris also exists within the same universe as these shows, which fits with how closely the series tries to mirror our own world.
The Boys’ Timely Pop Culture References Bring It Closer to the World It’s Satirizing

As a huge fan of The Boys, I’ve always loved that it’s not just about crazy superhero fights. It’s a really sharp satire, and Season 5 really drives that home. The first couple of episodes are tackling some incredibly relevant stuff – things like the pushback against diversity initiatives and the scary ways artificial intelligence is being used. It makes the whole world of the show feel shockingly close to our own, and honestly, I think that’s completely by design – the writers are really making a point.
The show subtly grounds itself in reality by referencing popular culture, like shows such as Reacher and Emily in Paris. This attention to detail makes the world of The Boys feel like a reflection of our own. The series has always included these kinds of pop-culture nods – we already know Butcher is a fan of the Spice Girls, and the Season 5 premiere cleverly referenced a famous scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past during A-Train’s fight. There are many other references to Marvel and DC characters as well. This technique helps make the show’s setting feel relatable, even as the storylines become increasingly over-the-top.
