The Bride! Projected to Break Historic Warner Bros. Box Office Streak

After a period of underperforming films, Warner Bros. had a remarkably successful year at the box office. Starting with the movie adaptation of Minecraft, seven of their releases opened to over $40 million domestically—a new record. While the potential Best Picture winner One Battle After Another didn’t reach that level, it still debuted at number one. Including February’s Wuthering Heights, nine consecutive Warner Bros. films topped the box office in their opening weekends. Unfortunately, that impressive run is expected to end this weekend.

Deadline reports that The Bride! is expected to make $16 to $18 million in the US and Canada during its opening weekend. Worldwide, it’s predicted to earn around $22 million more, bringing the total debut to roughly $38 to $40 million. However, this likely won’t be enough to top the box office, as Pixar’s Hoppers is currently tracking for a much larger $88 million worldwide opening, and The Bride! will also compete with the continuing success of Scream 7.

Can The Bride! Exceed Box Office Projections?

These numbers are just predictions, so The Bride! could actually perform better than we expect. We recently saw this with Scream 7, which was initially projected to earn $45-50 million but ultimately broke franchise records with $63.6 million. Last year, a couple of Warner Bros. films, like Sinners and Weapons, also surprised everyone with higher-than-expected earnings. However, those films either benefited from being part of a well-known series or had strong positive buzz beforehand.

Inspired by the classic film Bride of Frankenstein and starring Christian Bale as the monster, The Bride! uses familiar imagery. However, it’s not part of an established franchise, meaning its success will likely depend on people talking about it. Early reviews are decent (currently 60% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it hasn’t generated the same excitement as other recent releases like Sinners and Weapons. Critics generally applaud director Maggie Gyllenhaal for her ambitious and visually striking approach, but many feel some of her choices didn’t quite work. The film is often described as somewhat chaotic or ‘messy’.

Word of mouth could help the movie’s success, but it faces competition from other popular films. Hoppers is creating a buzz, and Scream 7 is still performing well, which means The Bride! might get overlooked. However, the film boasts a talented cast, including Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, and Penélope Cruz. These well-known actors could make The Bride! a strong alternative for movie fans, especially those waiting for Project Hail Mary.

Even if The Bride! isn’t a commercial success, it’s encouraging to see a creative and unusual film like this made by a major studio. The movie came about because Warner Bros. was trying to support films led by strong directors, also resulting in movies like One Battle After Another and Sinners. It’s vital that studio heads continue to take risks on projects like this, even if they don’t always succeed. These gambles can sometimes be hugely rewarding, and as Warner Bros. merges with Paramount, it’s hoped that those making decisions will remember that.
