The new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series will differ significantly from the original, a change that actually began 23 years ago with a storyline in the show. While Sarah Michelle Gellar will return as Buffy Summers, the series will focus on a new Slayer with a very different experience. Instead of being the first, this new Slayer will be mentored by Buffy herself, meaning a key element of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer mythos – the initial discovery and training of a Slayer – will be absent. This shift in storytelling started with the events of the episode “Bring on the Night,” which aired on December 17, 2002.
Let’s break down the latest series, the absence of Watchers for the Slayers, and the story behind the fall of his once-respected organization 23 years ago, as seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 7 Wiped Out the Watchers

In the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Watchers’ Council was the organization responsible for overseeing both the Watchers and those with the potential to become Slayers. For centuries, since the very first Slayer appeared in Africa, the Council led the global fight against vampires and demons. They were the ones who trained and assigned Watchers – like Rupert Giles – to guide and mentor Potential Slayers, setting the stage for the events of the original series.
For centuries, the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remained consistent, but everything shifted in its seventh and final season. The powerful First Evil launched a full-scale attack, aiming to eliminate anyone who might stand in the way of its ultimate control. In a surprising turn of events, Giles arrived with three young women: Kennedy, Molly, and Annabelle. These were Potential Slayers, and Giles delivered news to Buffy that dramatically altered the future of all Slayers.
The First Evil intended to eliminate all potential Slayers – those in training, their Watchers, and the active Slayers Buffy and Faith. More shockingly, Caleb had completely destroyed the Watchers Council headquarters and effectively disbanded the organization, wiping out most of its historical records. With the Council gone, the Slayer organization needs to adapt for the future, and the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series will focus on these changes.
How Will The Slayers Operate Without a Watcher?

The new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot doesn’t feature Watchers because the Watchers Council was destroyed in the original series’ final season. This was established not only in the last episodes of the TV show, but also in the comics that continued the story afterward. By the end of the original series, the transition was complete: Slayers were now training other Slayers, which also explains how multiple Slayers can exist at the same time.
In the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Watchers Council was eventually succeeded by the Slayer Organization. While similar in purpose, the Slayer Organization focused on directly training all Slayers, unlike the Watchers Council which trained people to train Slayers. After Rupert Giles, one of the last Watchers, passed away, the Slayer Organization also ceased to exist.
It will be fascinating to see how the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series handles training the next generation of Slayers. The comics established a large, dedicated training system for potential Slayers, but the upcoming show will likely focus more on Buffy herself taking on the mentor role, similar to Giles. However, Buffy’s approach will be distinct from Giles’. As a Watcher, Giles was a skilled magic user, while Buffy is an incredibly experienced and battle-hardened Slayer. This should lead to a more rigorous training style and offer a fresh perspective in the new series.
