I was disappointed to hear earlier this year that Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be ending after its second season – it was sad news for all of us who love the Heroes in a Half-Shell. The final episode just dropped on Paramount+, but there’s a bright side! The studio is still moving forward with a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. And even though the series is wrapping up, it’s staying in the news with a really cool crossover event featuring One Piece, which is a fantastic way to blend North American animation with the anime style.
In the newest season, Donatello starts communicating with a mutant creature called Wingnut, voiced by Natasia Demetriou (known from What We Do In The Shadows). As seen in the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Donatello is a big anime fan – he even talks about Attack on Titan. In a funny scene (available below), Wingnut shares a “secret message” for Donatello, referencing Nico Robin’s battle against CP9 in the anime One Piece.

The Teenage Anime Ninja Turtles
By the time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came out in 2023, Attack on Titan was already a well-known anime series. This allowed the filmmakers to draw inspiration from the show’s Scout Regiment when designing Donatello’s fighting style against the movie’s villain, Superfly. The fact that a North American cartoon character references an anime in its action sequences shows how popular and influential anime has become. Although the turtles haven’t had their own anime series recently, it’s possible they might return to the medium in the future.
As a huge fan of both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and One Piece, I’m really starting to think a crossover isn’t as crazy as it sounds! Last year, Viz Media and IDW actually did a crossover with Naruto, teaming up the Turtles with Team 7 in a four-issue comic. What was so cool was they didn’t have anyone traveling between universes – they just smashed the two worlds together, imagining everyone living in the same place. It really got me thinking… a comic where the TMNT are navigating the Grand Line? That could be amazing! Since we’ve already seen how well a Naruto and Turtles crossover worked, I’m seriously hoping we’ll see the Straw Hat Pirates meeting Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo someday. Fingers crossed!
