The Capture creator speaks about series future – and whether season 3 could be the last

Contains major spoilers for season 3 of The Capture.

Since the BBC’s crime drama The Capture first appeared in 2019, the technology it explored – particularly deepfakes – has become much more sophisticated and concerning. The show, a cyber thriller, originally focused on this technology, but it’s now even more advanced and harder to detect.

The popular show is back for a third season, and it begins with a surprising twist: the beloved character Isaac Turner (played by Paapa Essiedu) unexpectedly dies.

The new season immediately throws Carey into a series of shocking and heartbreaking situations, significantly increasing the pressure she’s under. The show’s creator, Ben Chanan, says this heightened intensity comes from his approach to writing each season as if it might be the final one.

Chanan explains to TopMob that he approaches each season of a show as if it could be its last. This means he doesn’t hesitate to write characters off the show, and encourages viewers to simply enjoy those moments when they happen.

The show’s creator discussed the reason for Isaac’s death, hinting that the explanation will be revealed in episode six of the current season. They initially said ‘season six’ but quickly corrected themselves. Fans are hoping this was a mistake and that the show will be renewed for multiple future seasons.

He confirmed there won’t be a sixth season, playfully adding that he’s been planning for the future since the very beginning. However, he admitted he hasn’t even finished writing much of season three.

Chanan explained that writing ‘The Capture’ is challenging because it blends science fiction with real-world events, which often means there’s a significant gap between seasons. It’s been four years since season two premiered – a long wait for viewers, especially now that streaming services usually release new episodes annually.

I’ve always been fascinated by how they walk that line – it’s a real challenge to create something that feels innovative and forward-thinking, but still relatable and grounded in reality. They don’t want to go so far into the future that it feels unbelievable, but they absolutely can’t afford to be stuck in the past. It’s about predicting what will resonate, not just what is, and that takes real vision.

Creating a TV series takes a long time – a couple of years, easily. So, when we begin planning and writing, we have to try and predict how audiences will react that far in the future. But honestly, it’s a bit of a gamble. We just take the leap and hope either the world agrees with our vision, or we quickly adjust to what the world wants.

Even as the third season of the show began filming, Chanan was still developing the story, meaning the actors didn’t know how the plotlines would be resolved because the ending hadn’t been decided yet.

Holliday Grainger described this season’s storyline as incredibly gripping, saying it kept her constantly guessing what would happen next. She enjoys reading the scripts because of the suspenseful twists and turns. Unlike the first season where all the scripts were available at once, this season’s episodes were written by Ben as filming progressed.

I was only filming the first and second installments, and that’s all I’d read of the script at that point. I intentionally kept it that way! Carey, the other actress, doesn’t need to know all the behind-the-scenes stuff, and honestly, I didn’t find out anything new until the scripts started arriving. It was amazing! I genuinely got excited every time a new script landed in my inbox – I had no idea what was going to happen next, and that made it so much fun.

Ben Miles, reprising his role as retired Commander Danny Hart, praised the show’s first episode, especially the surprising reveal that Isaac’s killer was the new Commander, Noah Pierson, calling it “fantastic.”

He was really impressed, saying it was a fantastic twist because it was completely unexpected. He was thrilled when the first episode ended, immediately wanting to know what would happen next and eager to see where the story would go.

The Capture season 3 will continue on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 15 March 2026.

I just saw that The Capture is available on the TopMob: What to Watch app, and I immediately added it to my watchlist! Seriously, if you’re looking for great TV recommendations and features, you should download the app – it gives you daily suggestions and more. I’m excited to finally check this show out!
