Over the last weekend, The Conjuring: Last Rites astonished everyone with its exceptional success, earning more than $194 million globally, significantly surpassing predictions about its box office earnings.
Given the current circumstances, it’s not unexpected that we’ve received significant updates about the franchise’s future, and it appears that its next chapter may unfold on television.
According to Variety’s reports, Sunny (previously known as Nancy Won), best recognized from Jessica Jones, is slated to take on the role of showrunner for an upcoming HBO Max series, which will be based within the universe of The Conjuring.
Concurrently, Peter Cameron (known for his work on Werewolf by Night and Moon Knight) and Cameron Squires (famous for Agatha All Along and Gen V) have been assigned as writers for the show.
HBO Max declined to comment when approached by the publication.
According to Variety, specifics about the plot are being kept secret for now. However, it’s been confirmed that Peter Safran will take on the role of an executive producer, and James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, will be responsible for producing the series.
To date, the Conjuring universe encompasses four primary movies, along with several spin-offs in the Annabelle and The Nun franchises. Additionally, there are a couple of films that are loosely connected, such as Wolves at the Door (2016) and The Curse of La Llorona (2019).
Last Rites” is anticipated to be the final film where Ed and Lorraine Warren appear. This movie depicts their investigation into a genuine case involving the Smurl family, who felt that their Pennsylvania house was tormented by a demon for approximately 15 years, from the mid-70s to the late ’80s.
James Wan shared with TopMob his rationale behind choosing the final cinematic project for Ed and Lorraine as this case, revealing that the inspiration for the first Conjuring film originally stemmed from a different movie focusing on the Smurl haunting.
He mentioned that there was a TV film from the early ’90s titled “The Haunted,” starring Sally Kirkland, which he adores. He particularly appreciates Sally’s performance in the movie and enjoys everyone in it. This movie was significant for him as it was his initial introduction to Ed and Lorraine Warren, making it a personal experience that came full circle later on.
My goal is to complete the entire franchise by concluding this film and the series. I’d like to do so using a movie that initially sparked my inspiration.”
“I aim to wrap up the whole saga by finishing both the movie and the series. This would be best accomplished using the film that originally inspired me.
