Although The Conjuring: Last Rites was promoted as the final film starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, producer Peter Safran has confirmed that the Conjuring universe will continue. Last Rites was the fourth main installment focusing on the Warrens, and while several spin-off movies have already been released, Safran suggests that future films may center on their daughter, Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson), and son-in-law, Tony Spera (Ben Hardy).
Safran revealed the update to Entertainment Weekly, where he explained:
That chapter of the story – with Patrick, Vera, and The Conjuring as we knew it – felt like a natural ending point. But honestly, there’s so much more to explore! I truly believe there are amazing possibilities for continuing the story, both in movies and on TV. As a fan who’s been following this for over a decade, I think audiences are really ready for more, and it would be incredibly rewarding to deliver it.
The Conjuring movies are based on the work of real paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the spin-off films cover different scary stories, the main Conjuring films all claim to be rooted in actual cases the Warrens investigated. If Judy and Tony become the new lead characters, it’s unclear how much future movies will be based on real events.
Despite Wilson and Farmiga treating the project like a farewell, Safran stated that the creative team didn’t see it that way, explaining:
Viewers weren’t tired of the story; in fact, people really connected with the characters like Patrick, Vera, Ed, and Lorraine, and enjoyed getting to know Judy and Tony. The positive response to these characters suggests there’s plenty of potential for future stories.
The Expanding Universe of ‘The Conjuring’

Warner Bros. Pictures
James Wan directed the first The Conjuring, a film that helped make him a well-known horror director. Beyond spawning four direct sequels, The Conjuring also launched the Annabelle series with three movies and the The Nun series with two.
News about a The Conjuring TV series first surfaced in 2023, but details about the show’s plot have remained scarce. Warner Bros. later confirmed that Nancy Won, known for Sunny, would lead the project as showrunner. However, with actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga stating they were moving on from the Conjuring universe, fans have been wondering how connected the series will be to the stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
A new movie is planned to delve into the infamous Amityville murders, focusing on the investigation led by Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the case was briefly mentioned in The Conjuring, this prequel will give a complete look at their involvement. News of the project surfaced in October, suggesting the film is moving forward.
