There’s a possibility that the animated series The Critic could return after 30 years, but it depends on one thing. Al Jean, who has run The Simpsons for a long time, is stepping down as showrunner after Season 37. Matt Selman will be taking over The Simpsons, and Jean is now focusing on other projects, including potentially bringing The Critic back.
Al Jean recently told Cracked that while he’s stepping down as showrunner of The Simpsons, discussions are ongoing about bringing back The Critic. He mentioned there’s still one obstacle to overcome. Given the recent success of revived adult animated series like King of the Hill on platforms like Hulu, a return for The Critic would likely be popular with audiences.
The Critic Revival Gets Promising Update From Creator
When asked about leaving The Simpsons, Jean revealed he has other projects in development, including one with Jon Lovitz. He hinted this might be a revival of The Critic, saying discussions are happening and Lovitz, Maurice LaMarche, and Mike Reiss are all on board. While there’s one remaining obstacle preventing the project from moving forward, Jean is working to resolve it.
Jean says he’s done everything he can to get the show going, suggesting the problem isn’t on his side. The difficulties in reviving ‘The Critic’ likely stem from the complicated ownership of its rights. The show initially aired on ABC for one season and then moved to FOX for another, and sorting out who controls the show after all these years is probably the biggest challenge to bringing it back.
Will The Critic Ever Return?

This Spring, both The Critic‘s creator, Al Jean, and star Jon Lovitz hinted at a possible revival of the show on social media. Jean started the conversation by asking fans if they’d be interested in seeing a return. Lovitz then encouraged fans to actively show their support, explaining he’s been trying to bring the show back for years and now has Jean’s support. He asked fans to like and share his post to demonstrate to the studio the level of interest.
Now that many popular animated shows from the 90s are making successful comebacks, The Critic is well-positioned to do the same. The show centered on Jay Sherman, a film critic who hilariously pointed out the problems with movies while navigating his personal life. This unique approach would be a great fit for today’s streaming-focused movie landscape.
