The Crown creator hints at prequel: ‘I’m not done with the Royal Family’

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a knack for historical dramas and a soft spot for the royal family’s shenanigans, I must say that Peter Morgan’s latest revelation about The Crown has me intrigued and slightly bewildered. With his signature touch of elegance and metaphorical storytelling, it seems we may not have seen the last of the Windsors on our screens just yet.

Peter Morgan, the mind behind the hugely popular Netflix series “The Crown,” is not finished exploring the lives of the British Royal Family just yet.

Recently, the writer mentioned in an interview his thoughts on potential new versions of “The Crown” following the conclusion of the period drama with its sixth and last season last year. He suggested that exploring the past more deeply through a spin-off prequel series could be intriguing.

With caution, Morgan emphasized again his reluctance to delve deeper into the narrative timeline. However, he shared an alternative approach he found more appealing for delving deeper into the story’s exploration.

He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that, for now, he can’t envision any situations where he would wish to delve deeper into the current state of things, yet he feels there may still be more to explore regarding the topic.

He went on to say, “Perhaps I’ll approach it from another angle,” or “Maybe I’ll take a new route.” If we travel backwards in time, we often get the luxury of using time-travel as a metaphor.

“By sharing an old tale, you could subtly convey a message about the current situation, making it appear as if it’s a story from the past, yet it holds relevance for today. I believe this approach could offer a more refined perspective.”

“To move forward from where I left the show off at the moment feels too soon.”

Season 6 of The Crown delved into several significant historical occurrences within the Royal Family, such as Princess Diana’s passing, the marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla, the growing romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the demise of Princess Margaret.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve always looked forward to the conclusion of “The Royals” saga, a decision made by its visionary creator, Morgan, after six captivating seasons. He believes that this juncture in the Royal family’s history is the perfect moment to draw the story to a close, encapsulating his intended narrative arc perfectly.

He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he generally follows a 20-year guideline for gaining a comprehensive understanding of something. This duration provides enough time and perspective to fully grasp its significance, its function, its place, and its importance.

Frequently, matters that seem incredibly crucial now can quickly fade from memory, while others tend to persist and turn out to be significantly important in the long run.

Morgan expressed that he aimed to steer clear of adopting a journalistic approach while dramatizing historical events, explaining: “I believe a dramatist should possess perspective and the ability to incorporate opportunities for symbolism. When something offers a chance for symbolic interpretation, it becomes intriguing.”

All six seasons of The Crown are available to stream now on Netflix.
