In the realm of superhero films and series, costume modifications are a significant aspect, and following Superman, the revamped DC Universe has undergone its inaugural transformation. Across all live-action superhero franchises, such as 20th Century Fox’s X-Men, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the DC Extended Universe, heroes frequently receive updated costumes. Typically, these alterations symbolize significant improvements for characters, with many recent changes aligning more closely with their comic book counterparts, and this is now the case in the DCU.
After the debut of the initial poster for 2026’s upcoming “Supergirl” movie, viewers spotted a change in Milly Alcock’s Kryptonian superhero outfit compared to the one she wore at the end of “Superman”. Alcock briefly appeared as Kara Zor-El’s Supergirl in “Superman” to retrieve her pet dog, Krypto, and establish her lead role in an upcoming DCU film. An image shared by @DiscussingFilm from the set of “Superman” showcases the contrast between this costume and the one depicted on the “Supergirl” poster, which was recently unveiled by James Gunn.
In the poster for her standalone film, Supergirl’s belt, skirt, and boots have been altered compared to how she appeared in Superman. The new belt is entirely golden, aligning more closely with her DC Comics belt design. Additionally, her skirt has a distinct texture change, and her boots now feature golden caps on the heels. Her outfit in this poster appears to be inspired by the costume she wore in DC Comics’ 2021 release, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which will serve as the blueprint for the 2026 Supergirl movie.
It’s quite surprising that, with just one live-action movie out in the rebooted DC Universe, we’ve already witnessed a costume change. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been meticulously planning the initial stages of the new DCU, and Superman kicked off the franchise spectacularly, paving the way for Supergirl to expand it further. It remains uncertain whether the costume adjustment seen in the Supergirl poster is due to fan feedback about Supergirl’s costume in Superman, or if this change was part of the character’s development plan all along.
In photographs taken during the filming of Supergirl earlier this year, Milly Alcock was donning the costume depicted in the official poster, distinct from the one seen in Superman. This could hint at a time leap or flashback within Supergirl, possibly featuring her original Superman costume as an early, rugged design, and her new costume being the one she adopts upon arriving on Earth. Excitement is mounting for the DCU’s upcoming feature film, with Supergirl set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, marking a significant step forward for the franchise’s second installment.
