As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at James Gunn’s knack for injecting humor into any creative project he tackles, regardless of the sandbox he finds himself in. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is a testament to his comedic prowess, even managing to elicit laughs from a tree-like creature (Groot) whose vocabulary consists of only four words!
Stepping into the DC Universe didn’t diminish Gunn’s humor; instead, it amplified it in his debut film, The Suicide Squad. By immersing characters in absurdly hilarious situations, he took comedic storytelling to a new level.
Now, as the head of DC Studios, Gunn’s creative freedom has expanded exponentially. He’s poised to sculpt the DC Universe into an intricate, humorous, and unforgettable realm that will surely captivate audiences worldwide.
To kick things off, the filmmaker decided it was time to revive Superman on the large screen, a move that seems shrewd given the anticipation from both fans and critics, as demonstrated by box office performance. However, before Supergirl can make her grand debut, there are matters to attend to in the smaller world of television. The second season of “Peacemaker” is vying for the title of top DC Universe project, and it’s creating a significant role for a character with no prior comic book history.
Langston Fleury Makes Quite an Entrance in Peacemaker Season 2

At the conclusion of Peacemaker Season 1, Christopher Smith manages to win favor with the government. As a Butterfly attack was about to occur, he eliminated the Cow, thus saving the world before the Justice Gang could intervene. Following this, Chris decides to reform and become a hero. However, Rick Flag Sr., who blames Peacemaker for his son’s death, plans to prevent this. He assigns John Economos to keep tabs on his old friend, positioning him near Auggie Smith’s former residence. Economos expresses some reservations about spying, so Flag Sr.’s underling, Sasha Bordeaux, puts someone in place to watch the watcher. Langston Fleury, portrayed by renowned comedian Tim Meadows, enters the scene and promptly begins delivering side-splitting punches at Economos, giving him a humorous nickname and mocking the other members of the 11th Street Kids.
Differently from other A.R.G.U.S. agents who have been featured in DC Comics, Fleury is an original character created by Gunn. He joins the cast of Peacemaker for its second season, adding a comedic touch to its more serious tone. The character’s humor becomes particularly evident during his conversations with Economos about his “bird blindness.” This condition makes Fleury unable to distinguish between various bird species, leading him to believe that Eagly is actually a duck. At first, this might seem like a joke, but things get interesting when Fleury visits Peacemaker’s house and can’t shoot Eagly because he can’t determine the bird’s size. However, despite his close call with Peacemaker’s pet, Fleury manages to live on since there are other characters in the story who need him to interact with before his story comes to an end.
Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen and Guy Gardner Have Some Serious Competition

Gunn’s approach to making Superman more light-hearted, similar to Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is limited. Instead, he recognizes that Superman’s humor primarily comes from supporting characters. Krypto occasionally provides some laughter through mischief, but Jimmy Olsen and Guy Gardner are the main sources. Jimmy’s charm stems from the adoration of women in Metropolis, particularly useful when it involves a dispute between him and Lex Luther’s girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher. However, Jimmy must carefully consider his choices as accepting her offer would mean spending time with someone he finds distasteful. Despite this, Jimmy makes the right decision, thereby allowing Guy to shine comedically.
In the comic book series “Superman“, Guy consistently acts as if he’s the coolest kid around, even when Superman himself is listening nearby. The Green Lantern’s unwavering self-assurance creates several amusing scenes, such as his disagreement with Lois Lane over his hairstyle. In the end, it’s Guy who gets to make an impressive entrance in “Superman“, as he only allows Metamorpho to join the Justice Gang once the new recruit acknowledges the team’s name is awesome. It’s unlikely that Guy Fleury will be on Maxwell Lord’s shortlist for recruitment, but it would still be worthwhile for him to approach Fleury because magic could undoubtedly transpire when these two are together in the same room.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
