The DC Universe is taking risks and showing a more complex side to its iconic characters. In the new *Superman* movie, we see a vulnerable side of the hero as he passionately explains his humanity to Lex Luthor. Similarly, Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, isn’t portrayed as flawless, and deals with her problems by partying and drinking. James Gunn seems determined to avoid simple, one-dimensional characters, even going so far as to give depth to supporting characters in *Peacemaker*. While the main character, Peacemaker, struggles with who he is, those around him are also facing their own challenges, from job troubles to feelings of self-doubt.
In the third episode of *Peacemaker* Season 2, titled “Another Rick Up My Sleeve,” a surprising revelation about Emilia Harcourt comes to light. It turns out her dislike of Peacemaker goes deeper than just a personality conflict. However, by exploring Harcourt’s past, the DC Universe unfortunately harms the reputation of what had been a genuinely good character.
Rick Flag Has a Dark Side in the DCU

The story begins just before the events of *The Suicide Squad*, with Rick Flag and Harcourt in bed together, discussing their night and what it means for their relationship. Harcourt worries that Flag is being unfaithful to his girlfriend, June Moone (also known as Enchantress), and fears losing him as a friend. Flag seems unconcerned, wanting to keep both women in his life. However, he never gets the chance to explore either relationship, as he ultimately dies by Peacemaker’s hand.
The emotional impact of the scene with Flag in *Peacemaker* comes from the fact that he’s typically the leader people rely on when things get bad. In *Suicide Squad*, he lets the team go, and they respect him enough to help him rescue his girlfriend and save the world. He even acts like a moral compass, similar to Captain America, by opposing the government’s unethical experiments on children. This bravery ultimately leads to his death, and just when *Peacemaker* seems to offer a chance for his redemption, that possibility is taken away again.
The DCU’s New Version of Rick Flag Isn’t Much Better

Peacemaker is having a rough time personally, so he escapes to an alternate universe. To his surprise, he discovers his alternate self used to date Harcourt, who he’s always been attracted to. He quickly contacts her and they hit it off, leading to an invitation to visit her at work. Unfortunately, going to A.R.G.U.S. headquarters turns out to be a mistake, as he finds Harcourt’s current boyfriend, Flag, is also there. Just when a confrontation seems inevitable, Flag surprisingly steps aside and lets Peacemaker leave with Harcourt.
This version of Flag isn’t as strong or resilient as the one who died, suggesting he won’t last long in the story. While the previous DC movie universe understood how important Flag was, the new DC Universe doesn’t seem to appreciate him, damaging the character’s previously positive image.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
