As a huge DC fan, it’s clear to me that the mixed reaction to the Green Lantern movie really held back those characters for a long time, and honestly, it impacted DC’s live-action plans for the whole group. But it seems like the folks behind the new DCU are paying attention to what didn’t work with Green Lantern and are trying a different approach this time around. They definitely seem to have learned from past mistakes when it comes to how they’re presenting these heroes and their stories.
The DC Universe’s Timeline Lets The Franchise Skip One Of Green Lantern’s Biggest Problems
A major criticism of the 2011 Green Lantern movie was its villain, and this was largely due to the choice of who played the antagonist.
Introducing Parallax as the villain in the first Green Lantern movie was challenging. The character’s complex backstory and the extensive history of the Green Lantern universe needed a lot of explanation for audiences unfamiliar with the lore.
Giving Parallax a personal connection to Hector Hammond made the story more complex, and it felt like it was mainly done to set up Sinestro as the villain in a future movie. It might have been simpler to introduce Sinestro first, as he’s historically been the Green Lanterns’ biggest enemy in the comics.
The new DC Universe seems to be avoiding the origin story approach seen in the previous Green Lantern movie. By introducing a more experienced Hal Jordan, the DCU can immediately establish Sinestro as a known enemy. This setup also allows them to handle the powerful entity Parallax in a fresh way, building on what they’ve already shown with the Green Lanterns.
The DCU’s First Green Lantern Project Could Avoid The Group’s Villains Altogether
The DC Universe’s approach to the Green Lanterns has been successful so far, sidestepping some of the problems faced by the 2011 Green Lantern movie. It’s managed to build up the heroes without immediately introducing their major enemies and galactic foes.
Introducing characters like Guy Gardner in shows like Superman and Peacemaker, and exploring the Green Lanterns in this way, is a smart approach. It helps viewers unfamiliar with this part of the DC universe understand who the Green Lanterns are and what they can do before getting into the larger story.
The new DC Universe show, Lanterns, appears to be a mystery taking place on Earth rather than a space adventure. Because of this, even the first Green Lantern-focused project might not include traditional Green Lantern villains. This could actually be a good thing, allowing the show to properly develop the Green Lanterns themselves before introducing their enemies.
