In a universe teeming with superheroes, everyday life isn’t as glamorous as it seems. Common folk often miss out on the acclaim that follows vanquishing villains or rescuing dogs from monstrous attacks. Instead, they must navigate their lives, occasionally making difficult choices that challenge their ethics. Currently, John Economos finds himself in a predicament within the DC Universe’s Peacemaker series, still employed by A.R.G.U.S., watching over his former team. His new superior, Rick Flag Sr., has it in for Christopher Smith, which puts Economos in a tricky position. The only reason he continues is because he believes he can safeguard his friends from within the organization.
Economos bears a considerable burden, clearly more than usual, and he confides in another member of the 11 Street Kids, Leota Adebayo, about his struggles. Although Leota empathizes with Economos’ situation, she has her own hardships to deal with as life has been unkind to her recently. In point of fact, despite being one of DCU’s most admired characters, the new franchise is giving her a tough time, making her life rather challenging.
Leota Adebayo Is Being Punished for Doing the Right Thing
In the first season of Peacemaker, Leota finds herself in a challenging predicament. Following the loss of her pet shop, she’s left with no job and few options. Desperate for income, she reaches out to her mother, Amanda Waller, who heads A.R.G.U.S. Although this move brings financial relief, it comes at a high cost as Amanda demands Leota to infiltrate Project Butterfly and falsely implicate Peacemaker for the murders committed during the mission. The task initially appears straightforward due to Peacemaker’s violent nature, but Leota soon discovers that he’s more misinterpreted than malicious. As their friendship blossoms, she faces a tough decision at the season’s end – revealing her mother’s operation’s truth to the world.
After Leota arrives home, she hugs her spouse, Keeya Adebayo, and their two pets, preparing to embark on a fresh chapter. However, Season 2 of Peacemaker unveils that no one can outsmart Waller, not even her own child. In the first episode, “The Ties That Grind,” we see Leota living alone following a separation from Keeya. It’s later discovered that Waller is essentially blacklisting everyone associated with Project Butterfly, leaving Leota with limited alternatives. She then chooses to establish a private investigation agency, but lacks clients at the moment. This situation is unacceptable for Keeya, who expresses her frustration in Episode 2, “A Man Is Only as Good as His Word,” over empty promises from her wife. Even visiting Keeya’s apartment without prior consent is not acceptable to her. With no other options, Leota is trying to remain optimistic amidst the hardship, much like her friends.
All of the 11th Street Kids Are Fighting Their Demons
Emilia Harcourt, a close companion of Leota’s, finds herself in a parallel predicament, struggling to secure employment due to Waller’s meddling. This situation has become increasingly stressful for her, leading to frequent outbursts towards Chris. The constant verbal blows from the woman he admires deeply are particularly difficult for Chris, especially since he requires emotional support more than ever. It’s hard for him because all he wants is a listening ear, but the Justice Gang doesn’t seem to want him. With negativity piling up, Peacemaker seeks solace in an alternate universe where his father and brother are still alive and show affection towards him. However, this escape route turns sour when the other Peacemaker returns home. In a tight spot again, he manages to wriggle out by eliminating his counterpart. Now, with an opportunity to live a different life, Peacemaker might not be the only one tempted by it.
After Adebayo understands Chris’ actions, she might unwittingly end up in an alternate dimension, considering the possibility of temporarily assuming their life as a fresh perspective. Given the dire situation at home, exploring this option seems harmless. However, it’s important to note that James Gunn isn’t planning to relocate his entire cast to another universe permanently. Instead, a temporary shift could provide Adebayo with a renewed outlook and ambitions, enabling her to return home refreshed.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
