DC Universe has released the first trailer for its upcoming series, Lanterns, which centers around Green Lantern. The trailer offers a first glimpse into the show’s true crime storyline and the relationship between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Most excitingly, it confirms a popular Green Lantern character as part of the official DCU timeline and hints at when we might see them appear.
Most of the trailer for Lanterns shows Jordan (Kyle Chandler) training Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and during a car ride, Stewart asks Jordan if heās spoken to other Lanterns. Jordan replies that he’s the only human among them, explaining they are all aliensāand one of them is even a squirrel! That squirrel is Chāp, a small but mighty Green Lantern, and his inclusion in the DCU has made it significantly more exciting.
Who The Hell Is Chāp, And When Could We See Him In Lanterns?

The Green Lantern Corps is made up of members from all over the galaxy. While characters like Jordan, Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner are famous Earth-based Lanterns, theyāre just one small part of a much larger cosmic force. Chāp is one of those other Lanterns, and he once protected Sector 1014. He first appeared in a Green Lantern comic book in 1981, created by Paul Kupperberg and Don Newton. Though he isn’t actually a squirrel, he looks like one, so everyone refers to him as one.
Seeing a squirrel as Green Lantern is visually striking, but the story of how he became one is even more compelling. Chāp was a leader who fought against the invasion of his peaceful home planet, Hālven, by the evil Doctor Ubāx and his forces. Captured and sentenced to death as a warning to others, Chāp was about to face execution when a glimmer of hope appeared.
While facing execution, Chāp was given a Power Ring by a Guardian and invited to become a Green Lantern. He accepted, using the ringās power to defeat Ubāx and his forces, bringing peace to his planet. Afterward, Chāp traveled to Oa to train with Kilowog, quickly becoming a valuable and dependable member of the Green Lantern Corps.
I’ve always been fascinated by Chāp! He wasn’t just a hero, he had a whole life ā even a collection of enemies like Battle Beaver and Chick Fury, and a wife named Mānnāe. It’s heartbreaking that Doctor Ubāx tried to erase Chāp from everyoneās memory, including Mānnāe, and she ended up marrying his best friend, Dāll. Honestly, thereās so much potential for stories with Chāp in the DC Universe. But even if they donāt go that route, Iām really enjoying the connection between him and Jordan, and I have a feeling Jordan might even start calling him ‘little guy’ before long. It would be a sweet moment!

It’s likely Chāp will appear in an episode that explores the larger universe of the Green Lantern Corps. It’s unclear if this will be in a flashback or later in the season, but a group scene featuring other Lanterns from OA is the most probable place weāll first see him in the DC Universe. While it would be great to hear him speak and interact with other characters, simply seeing him on screen and confirming his place in this world would be satisfying for now.

It’s great to see Chāp alive in the new DC Universe! His death is well-known among Green Lantern fans ā he was famously run over by a yellow truck, highlighting the Green Lanternsā old weakness to the color yellow. Seeing him alive and well is definitely something to be happy about.
Lanterns will release on HBO Max this August.
