I love how open James Gunn is with fans! It’s so cool that he actually *engages* with all the theories floating around. I noticed when everyone was buzzing about Robin possibly showing up in *The Batman Part II*, Gunn didn’t exactly shut down the rumors, which was fun. But he’s even more chatty when it comes to projects he’s directly working on. Like with *Peacemaker* Season 2 – because it came out week by week, he’s been pretty quick to talk about what’s happening and how it all connects to the bigger DC Universe, which as a fan, I really appreciate!
The finale of *Peacemaker* Season 2 dramatically shifts things, introducing an idea that could have huge implications for both the heroes and villains of the series. Although James Gunn isn’t revealing many details, a clear direction for the future has emerged, and it might even allow the DC Universe to confirm a popular fan theory.
The DCU Is Adapting a Little-Known DC Comics Storyline
The season finale of *Peacemaker* focuses on Rick Flag Sr.’s mission, codenamed “Salvation.” He’s determined to locate a planet where he can exile dangerous super-powered individuals, protecting Earth from their threats. Though some agents sacrifice their lives in the process, Flag Sr. succeeds in finding a suitable planet for these villains. Initially, it appears the “Salvation” reveal is just a setup for future events, as no one actually goes through the portal before the episode ends. However, in a surprising twist, Peacemaker is blindfolded and led to the portal itself. Flag Sr. explains he’s doing it for his son, and Peacemaker heartbreakingly realizes he won’t be getting the happy ending he hoped for.
James Gunn appears to be building towards a story inspired by the ‘Salvation Run’ comic book arc. In that story, Amanda Waller and Rick Flag assemble the Suicide Squad to gather supervillains and send them to a harsh, distant planet. This planet, Salvation, is used by the forces of Apokolips for training purposes. When Batman learns about this, he dispatches a trusted ally to investigate and provide updates. While this character isn’t currently an official member of the DC Universe, many fans speculate they’ve been subtly introduced already.
A Minor Peacemaker Character Could Be the Key to the DCU’s Take on Salvation Run
Flag Sr.’s plan isn’t very well thought out. Instead of taking someone no one would notice missing, he kidnaps Peacemaker, who’s just built a new team of friends. While Emilia Harcourt and Leota Adebayo will likely lead the search, some fans believe Langston Fleury should be in charge – especially now that he’s leaving A.R.G.U.S. to work with Checkmate. Viewers have been eager to learn more about Fleury since he first appeared, and many now theorize he’s secretly the Martian Manhunter, disguising himself as human by pretending to have a rare condition called bird blindness.
It initially seemed unlikely that Fleury could also be a superhero. However, including the storyline from *Salvation Run* changes things. In that story, Martian Manhunter goes undercover on the planet Salvation Run, posing as the villain Blockbuster, at Batman’s request. He’s quickly discovered, and the other villains abandon him, leaving him to die. While that fate is possible within the DC Universe, Fleury already has an ally on Salvation Run—someone who will help him when things get tough. This opens the possibility for James Gunn to develop Fleury into a true hero, potentially even a member of the Justice League.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
