When a franchise decides to start over with a reboot, it expects some audience confusion. Movies and TV shows rarely begin with a title card telling viewers to disregard previous installments. Usually, there isn’t one at all, but James Gunn, head of DC Studios, is taking a different approach to get everyone on the same page with his new universe. While Superman dives directly into the story, the HBO Max series Peacemaker takes a more deliberate pace, starting with a montage that clarifies what from the show’s first season is still considered official canon.
The main point, naturally, is that the Justice Gang steps in for the Justice League and arrives just in time to save the world from the Butterfly invasion. This can make you overlook the significant scenes and characters that aren’t included. Luckily, the DC Universe isn’t abandoning any storylines. It actually introduced another character from the DC Extended Universe, guaranteeing their heartbreaking tale won’t be lost.
A.R.G.U.S. Isn’t the Only Orginization After Peacemaker in Season 1
Christopher Smith, after the events of The Suicide Squad, is seriously injured and shaken up. Once he recovers, he returns to his home in Evergreen, Washington, hoping for a fresh start. However, he quickly seeks out companionship and begins dating a woman named Annie Sturphausen, whom he meets at a bar. Things are going well until Annie unexpectedly attempts to kill him, exhibiting bizarre and inhuman behavior. Peacemaker uses his helmet to protect himself, and Annie is killed in the struggle. This incident draws the attention of the local police, and detectives Larry Fitzgibbons and Sophie Song are assigned to investigate.
While Chris delves deeper into the mystery of the Butterflies and re-partners with A.R.G.U.S., Fitzgibbons and Song pursue their own investigation. Unfortunately, they find themselves in a dangerous situation, and aliens take control of their bodies, resulting in their deaths. In the Season 1 finale, the 11th Street Kids are left with the grim task of ending their suffering. When Fitzgibbons and Song weren’t featured in the Season 2 opening recap, many believed the DCU was writing them out of the story. However, the second-to-last episode of Peacemaker‘s second season completely changes that perception.
Fitzgibbons Is Back in a Big Way in Peacemaker Season 2
Even after saving the world, Chris still faces constant problems in Peacemaker Season 2. It feels like everyone is against him, leading him to seek a fresh start in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Initially, Earth-2 seems perfect – it offers him a family, romance, and a chance to be a hero. However, Chris is overlooking some serious warning signs, like a massive Hitler mural in the A.R.G.U.S. office. When Auggie Smith discovers that his “son” and his friends aren’t native to this reality, he invites them to his house to discuss the situation and create a strategy. Their discussion is unexpectedly interrupted by Fitzgibbons, who is investigating the attack on A.R.G.U.S. and the deaths of several police officers.
With a single, decisive move, Peacemaker solidifies a significant portion of its first season as official backstory. The only character absent is Song, who isn’t seen with her fellow Evergreen members. However, there’s a clear reason for this – in this warped version of reality, anyone who isn’t white ends up imprisoned in a camp. Whether Song will appear in a dramatic scene in the final episode of Season 2 is uncertain, and it doesn’t seem likely. The 11th Street Kids leave Earth-2 and return to their own world after their true identities are revealed. Perhaps that’s for the best, as it would be incredibly painful to watch Fitzgibbons treat his former partner the same way Keith Smith treats Leota Adebayo.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
