The DCU Just Removed Another Part of the DCEU (But It’s for the Best)

James Gunn is now in charge of establishing the official storyline for the DC Universe. Because everything he approves will become part of a connected franchise, he’s being very selective about which projects move forward. While having Gunn lead DC Studios seems like a simple solution, his past work for the company adds some complexity. Before taking his current role, he created *The Suicide Squad* and *Peacemaker*. The previous DC Universe hadn’t focused much on consistent storylines, which allowed Gunn creative freedom – he could eliminate characters and bring in cameos from popular DC heroes, even the Justice League.

James Gunn’s past creative choices are now having consequences as he leads DC Studios. The start of *Peacemaker* Season 2 changes what happened at the end of Season 1, swapping the Justice League for the Justice Gang from the *Superman* universe. While this is a change to the story, it’s not as drastic as completely removing a plot point, which is what *Peacemaker* does by revealing a surprising detail about Peacemaker’s life after his victory over the Butterflies.

Peacemaker Is Seeing Ghosts At the End of Season 1

After a harrowing experience in Corto Maltese, Christopher Smith is hospitalized and barely survives. Once recovered, he returns home with nothing but a trailer and his falcon, Eagly, who his father, Auggie Smith, has been looking after. Visiting Auggie to reclaim Eagly leads to a tense and painful confrontation, as Auggie unfairly blames Chris for the death of their other son, Keith – despite having forced the brothers to fight. Though everyone attempts to move forward, A.R.G.U.S. makes a critical error, framing Auggie for a crime and imprisoning him to protect Chris. Fueled by revenge, the White Dragon resurfaces and targets the 11th Street Kids.

Okay, so as a huge fan of the show, the season finale was a wild ride! Peacemaker was trying to save the world from these aliens, but he kept getting messed with by a group of white supremacists. It forced him into this impossible situation. Things got *really* intense when Chris finally confronted his dad, Auggie, and actually shot him! Auggie honestly thought Chris wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger, but boy, was he wrong. It was a shocking moment, and it allowed Chris to save everyone. But, killing his dad came with a heavy price. The season ended with Peacemaker seeing Auggie’s ghost, which made it seem like he’d be haunted for a while. While Auggie *did* come back in a way, it wasn’t exactly what it looked like – it was much more complicated than just a haunting!

White Dragon Is Back in Peacemaker in a Big Way

Season 2 starts with Chris in a better place – he has good friends and even interviews with the Justice Gang. However, he faces rejection from the superhero team and Emilia Harcourt, which is discouraging. A visit to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber reveals an alternate reality where his father is still alive, and despite his problems at home, he appreciates the chance to connect. Sadly, his alternate self is killed by Peacemaker, creating an opportunity for Chris to take his place and finally spend quality time with his father and brother, Keith Smith.

I’ve learned that A.R.G.U.S. has been watching Peacemaker’s every move, and they finally make their play in Season 2, Episode 4. Luckily, John Economos is a good friend and warned Chris about it, giving him enough time to call Leota Adebayo for a ride. He filled her in on everything, and honestly, she said she was even *more* freaked out than when he told her he was seeing his dad’s ghost! That comment really confirmed that the DCU has dropped the whole haunted dad storyline and is now focusing on the alternate White Dragon as the main problem. It makes sense, but I’m worried – if Peacemaker has to deal with his dad again, it feels like we’ll be right back where we started.

Peacemaker is streaming on HBO Max.
