James Gunn‘s recent statements about Darkseid have gotten fans excited about the possibility of other great DC villains becoming the main, powerful antagonist for the new DC Universe. Because the DC Universe is still in its early stages, almost anything feels possible, especially since we don’t yet have a complete understanding of the long-term plan.
It’s clear the plans for the DC Universe are ambitious, and the groundwork for interconnected stories is already in place. This suggests we can expect large-scale crossover events soon, which means some of DC’s most compelling villains might finally appear in major films.
James Gunn’s Darkseid Comments Make The DCU Debut Of Several Major DC Villains Look More Likely
James Gunn addressed the possibility of Darkseid appearing in the DC Universe, and while doing so, he also gave credit to Zack Snyder, the director of previous DC films.
Bringing Darkseid in as the main villain feels a bit unnecessary, for several reasons. Zack Snyder already used him effectively in his films, and it seems influenced by Marvel’s success with Thanos.
I’m feeling optimistic about Darkseid still being a possibility for the DCU, based on what James Gunn has said. It sounds like he’s just not the first villain they’re planning. Apparently, they’re hesitant to jump right to Darkseid because he’s a bit too similar to Thanos from Marvel, and the last time we saw a Darkseid storyline in the DCEU was pretty recent. So, it seems like we’ll likely see other villains take center stage as the main threat before Darkseid makes his appearance, which honestly makes a lot of sense to me.
With the Green Lanterns arriving in the Lanterns show around the middle of next year, a powerful villain like Sinestro, Parallax, or even Nekron – who famously turned many DC heroes and villains into zombie-like followers – would be a great choice as the franchise’s main, long-term enemy.
Given the power levels of Supergirl, Superman, and the new hero Man of Tomorrow, it makes sense for the first major villain in the DC Universe to be someone who can challenge these Kryptonian heroes. Brainiac is a likely candidate, but there’s also potential for other powerful DC villains like Mongul and Despero to fill that role.
The DCU’s Current Track Record Bodes Well For The Franchise’s First Major Big Bad
As a huge DC fan, it’s amazing to think about all the heroes and villains James Gunn and Peter Safran could pull from the comics for the new DCU. If they’re really aiming for a massive, Darkseid-level threat right off the bat in Chapter 1, there are so many characters they could introduce early on to build towards that.
The DCU’s willingness to showcase both well-known and lesser-known characters is a good sign for what’s to come, suggesting a balanced approach to its universe.
The DC Universe’s goal is to faithfully adapt the comic book world for film and television. This opens the door for villains who previously seemed too difficult to portray, making them potential candidates to become the DCU’s main, overarching antagonist – similar to Darkseid.
With opportunities for DC’s most unusual villains now greater than ever, the future of the DC Universe looks very promising, even if Darkseid isn’t involved.
