With the DC Universe officially underway, fans are eager to know what’s happening with Batman. Matt Reeves’ Batman films exist in their own separate world, so everyone is wondering how the new DC Universe will introduce its own version of the character. James Gunn, one of the heads of DC Studios, has acknowledged this is a challenge, but says they have a plan. The movie *The Brave and the Bold* is currently being developed and will feature an older Bruce Wayne. Fans are especially keen to find out who will be cast as Batman in the film, and Gunn recently shared some positive news about the casting process.
James Gunn recently discussed the progress of *The Brave and the Bold* script on the *The Ringer-Verse* podcast, stating that while work continues, it isn’t complete. He also talked about potential Batman actors, confirming he has a list of favorites. He explained that, like with Superman, his initial choices don’t necessarily get the role, and a full audition process is still needed. While he wouldn’t rule out casting a major star without an audition, he suggested it’s unlikely. He mentioned one particularly well-known actor has expressed interest in playing Batman, but Gunn isn’t sure if it will happen.
Will James Gunn Cast An Unknown as the DCU’s Batman?

James Gunn’s remarks show how casting decisions change as a movie develops. While David Corenswet was the ideal choice for Superman, he wasn’t the only actor considered. For a key character like Batman, Gunn plans to look at many different actors, not just his favorites. Someone unexpected could deliver an amazing audition and quickly become the frontrunner. Once the script for *The Brave and the Bold* is finished, Gunn and the team will begin searching for the best actor to bring the character to life.
It’ll be interesting to see whether James Gunn chooses a lesser-known actor or a big star for his DC Universe projects. He’s indicated that fame won’t be a barrier – he’d have even considered Chris Pratt as Superman if Pratt were younger. Considering his *The Brave and the Bold* focuses on an older, more seasoned Batman, it’s likely he’ll cast a well-known actor. Previous actors who’ve played Batman, like Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson, were already established stars, so Gunn might go in that direction.
However, choosing an actor who isn’t a huge star also has benefits. DC Studios could save money on salaries, and it might be easier for audiences to accept a fresh face as Batman without preconceived notions. This allows the actor to fully embody the role. It’s good to hear James Gunn is considering all options, and his mention of talking to “a pretty big star” has fans speculating about Alan Ritchson, who is known for his role in *Reacher*. Although, Ritchson has recently suggested he probably won’t be cast as Batman.
As a huge DC fan, I’m trying to stay patient, but the wait for news on who will play Batman in *The Brave and the Bold* feels long! It’s still a few years off, and James Gunn doesn’t want it to come out in the same year as *The Batman Part II* in 2027, meaning we’re probably looking at a 2028 release for *The Brave and the Bold* at the earliest. Honestly, that gives them plenty of time to find the *perfect* actor – and knowing Gunn’s track record, I’m confident they’ll do just that!
