James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, recently provided updates about the upcoming Batman and Wonder Woman movies during an interview on Urbana Play 104.3 FM. In this conversation, he hinted that both “The Brave and the Bold” Batman movie and a fresh Wonder Woman film are currently in active development. However, Gunn emphasized that production won’t begin until a final script that he finds satisfactory has been completed. Gunn made it clear that he always prioritizes having an exceptional screenplay before starting any project.
Gunn stated that the project won’t start until the scripts are completed. Currently, both scripts are being written, and if they turn out well, they’ll jump straight into production. The timeline is contingent on how quickly they can finalize the scripts. Gunn emphasized his unwillingness to begin production without an exceptional script, especially for characters who deserve nothing less. He’d prefer to delay a year than rush into it prematurely.
One of the early films James Gunn unveiled when he initially shared his broader plans for the DC Universe franchise a couple of years back was “The Brave and the Bold.” This upcoming movie, directed by Andy Muschietti, focuses on an older Bruce Wayne and his relationship with his son, Damian Wayne. Unlike Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II,” which is scheduled for release in October 2027, “The Brave and the Bold” currently lacks a confirmed release date. In contrast to “The Batman Part II,” which exists within its own continuity, Gunn is grappling with how to integrate Batman seamlessly into the DC Universe.
Lately, it’s been confirmed that a fresh Wonder Woman film is in production. However, this cinematic venture isn’t linked to the TV show Paradise Lost, but they will share connections since they both revolve around the inhabitants of Themyscira. For now, specifics about the DCU’s Wonder Woman movie are being tightly guarded, although rumors suggest that Gal Gadot won’t reprise her role as Diana Prince in this new film.
Due to the ongoing development of both “The Brave and the Bold” and “Wonder Woman,” director Gunn hasn’t yet announced a specific timeline for when filming will begin or when these movies will hit theaters. However, it’s intriguing that the scripts are being written at this time, indicating that these two projects are high on DC Studios’ list of priorities. If all goes well, we might see one of them start production as soon as next year. As of now, there are no DCU films scheduled for 2027 release, and the plan is to shape the franchise over the next decade. We’ll be eagerly watching how “The Brave and the Bold” and “Wonder Woman” progress in the coming months.
It’s fantastic that Gunn is staying committed to his approach of having a solid script ready before filming starts. In response to the success of Superman, there might have been a rush to produce more DC superhero projects quickly. However, Superman‘s success was due to Gunn’s patience and waiting until he had a compelling narrative. It’s reassuring that he’s following the same method for other DC heroes, hoping it brings similar outcomes. Additionally, DC Studios has temporarily halted some projects like Sgt. Rock to let them mature further before production begins.
