Jason Momoa, already known for playing Aquaman in DC films, is now taking on a new DC character: Lobo. He’s been wanting to play Lobo for a long time, and he’s joined the cast of the upcoming Supergirl movie. While his role might not be huge, Momoa’s involvement is a big reason fans are excited about the film, which is set to release next summer. With marketing for Supergirl now starting, we’re finally getting a glimpse of Momoa as the fan-favorite mercenary.
DC Studios just dropped the first trailer for Supergirl. The trailer mainly introduces Kara Zor-El as a tough, world-weary hero and gives a strong sense of the movie’s overall style. It also includes a quick glimpse of Lobo – though mostly hidden in shadows – which has fans excited. Check out the brighter screenshot below for a clearer look!

Jason Momoa’s Lobo Appearance Is Comics-Accurate
Jason Momoa has consistently promised fans that his Lobo costume would be very faithful to the comic book version, even claiming it’s a perfect match. While the first Supergirl trailer didn’t show much of Lobo, the glimpse we did get confirms Momoa wasn’t exaggerating. The team behind Supergirl clearly worked hard to stay true to the original comics, continuing the approach James Gunn established of honoring comic book traditions. They could have easily changed Lobo’s look for the movie, but sticking to the iconic comic book design—thanks to director Craig Gillespie and the team—was the right choice.
Lobo has appeared in animated form before, but the upcoming Supergirl series marks his first live-action appearance. Because many viewers will be meeting Lobo for the first time through this show, the creators were careful to stay true to the comic book version and capture what fans already love about the character. With the success of Superman and Peacemaker, the DCU is on a roll, and they want to make sure Lobo continues that positive momentum, leaving audiences excited rather than disappointed.
If the costume lives up to the hype, Jason Momoa is sure to be a standout in Supergirl. He seems perfectly cast in the role, as it really showcases his charisma and energy. While he was fantastic as Aquaman in the DCEU, Lobo feels like an even better match for his skills. Hopefully, Supergirl is just the beginning, and we’ll see Momoa in many more DCU projects. His appearance in the film, even if it’s a smaller one, could pave the way for a bigger future with the franchise.
DC is making a good decision by pacing the reveal of Lobo. With over six months still to go before Supergirl comes out, they don’t need to show everything at once. The brief glimpse confirms Lobo will be in the movie and that he finally looks like his comic book counterpart. This allows the marketing team to save a potentially exciting element for later. We likely won’t see a full reveal of Lobo for several more months, probably when Supergirl’s promotion really ramps up – especially if he doesn’t have a large role. Warner Bros. will definitely want to use Jason Momoa’s popularity to create buzz for future trailers and commercials.
