The DCU’s Flash Replacement Makes 1 of DC’s Smartest Retcons Canon

The DC Universe isn’t holding back; it kicks off its cinematic universe with ‘Superman’, a film where Superman confronts his main adversary, Lex Luthor, and his associates. However, Clark Kent won’t be by himself for too long as his cousin, Supergirl, is scheduled to star in her own movie in 2026. Following closely are three other powerful DC characters: Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Although a Justice League film isn’t planned yet, it’s evident that James Gunn and his team are laying the groundwork for the legendary DC team to unite on the big screen when the moment is right.

Another significant character from the DC Universe, besides The Flash, who could pave the way is yet to be determined. There’s been much discussion about whether Barry Allen or Wally West will assume the role of the Scarlet Speedster in the franchise, as they both have held

The Flash’s First Mentor Makes 2 Very Brief Appearances in Superman

Regardless of his several years of crime-fighting experience, Superman encounters a situation he can’t handle in the movie named Superman. Lex discloses to the populace that Superman’s parents intended for him to take over Earth, causing public sentiment against their beloved hero. In an attempt to maintain transparency, Superman surrenders, but Lex has already gained influence with the authorities, and they permit the antagonist to imprison his foe in a dimension-bound prison. Lois Lane discovers this secret jail, prompting her to approach the Justice League for assistance. They’re currently gathered in the Hall of Justice, and none of them seem particularly keen on getting involved except Mister Terrific. Lois might be wishing that one of the heroes depicted on the Hall of Justice’s mural were available to help.

The artwork at the Justice Gang’s secret base showcases various prominent DC characters, ranging from ancient heroes such as Silent Knight to more recognizable figures like Wildcat and Zatara, along with Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord. While these characters are impressive, there’s another character in the mural who could significantly alter the course of the DC Universe if he’s still alive: Max Mercury, a member of the Flash family who is the eldest among them. Initially, it was believed that the speedster depicted in the mural was Garrick; however, upon closer examination, it appears to be Max Mercury, also known as Whip Whiplash, and previously, perplexingly referred to as Quicksilver.

In the mural, Mercury appears twice, initially as Whip Whiplash set in a earlier era, followed by Max Mercury later on. Originally, he was a character from Quality Comics and a speedster similar to The Flash, but with little detail provided about him. Mark Waid reimagined this character in 1993, using him to enrich the Flash and Speed Force backstory within the DCU timeline. This transformation of Max Mercury was so impactful that his initial version has largely been overshadowed. Essentially, Max Mercury is considered the first Flash, and due to his time-traveling narrative, there’s a possibility he may reappear in future stories.

The DCU Doesn’t Need Wally West and Barry Allen (Yet)

The CW’s Arrowverse may have its flaws, but it stands tall as the most steadfast DC franchise in the 21st century. A significant factor contributing to its popularity is the portrayal of Grant Gustin’s character, Barry Allen. Transforming from a timid scientist into a fearless hero across nine seasons, Barry overcomes every adversary he encounters and plays a crucial role in preserving the multiverse during “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” He also mentors a new crop of speedsters, including Wally West, who initially doesn’t have as impressive a track record as his adopted brother, but still leaves an indelible mark on the Arrowverse. For a short while, Wally even joins the Legends of Tomorrow.

In simpler terms, Mercury could have his moment to shine in the DC Universe (DCU) by being introduced as the first Flash. This would provide an opportunity for this underdeveloped character to take center stage and establish the DCU’s unique identity, differentiating it from previous representations like the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Unlike the DCEU movies, which feature Barry Allen but often focus more on Batman, the new Flash story could allow him to truly flourish. Instead of forcing a square peg into a round hole by trying to mimic what’s come before, we can utilize an existing speedster character, enhancing the diversity and originality of the DCU.
