The DCU’s Superman Retcon Creates a Major Supergirl Question

James Gunn’s emerging DC Universe is revising aspects from its past history, which has an intriguing effect on the series Supergirl. With Gunn’s DCU taking over from the discontinued DCEU, there have been constant queries about what qualifies as canon and what does not, given productions like Peacemaker that straddle both universes. For the most part, it has been simplified, with shows like Superman, Creature Commandos, and the second season of Peacemaker all taking place in the same universe; however, efforts were needed to arrive at this point.

[Warning: Contains mild spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 1]

In simpler terms, in the second season of Peacemaker, the scene from the finale of Season 1 featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Aquaman has been rewritten. Now, it features Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, along with a different version of Superman (played by David Corenswet instead of Henry Cavill), and Supergirl. This alteration is a sensible move that mostly preserves the integrity of Season 1 while adjusting the cameos of the Justice League. However, what stands out and might surprise viewers is the addition of Supergirl alongside the team.

Why Is Supergirl Working With The Justice Gang?

While Superman and Supergirl aren’t formally part of the Justice Gang in Peacemaker Season 2, director James Gunn has confirmed that they are collaborating, but not as a single team. This aligns with Superman’s established cooperative relationships with other heroes, as seen in his own series. However, Supergirl seems less likely to work closely with the Justice Gang given her character traits, as she wasn’t part of their team prior to Peacemaker Season 2.

In simpler terms, Supergirl made a brief appearance in the film “Superman,” where she was found disheveled after consuming alcohol on a planet with a red sun. According to Gunn, this version of Supergirl was quite a mess. There’s no indication that she was a hero on Earth or worked with the Justice League, let alone her cousin Superman. The question arises as to how closely Supergirl collaborated with them and even fought alongside Superman, given her past cooperation. However, during the movie events, it seems there was no such collaboration between Supergirl and the team.

Those questions are not issues at all; instead, they represent fascinating possibilities. The 2026 Supergirl film could shed light on these questions, providing us with a more comprehensive view of Supergirl’s timeline, background, and current mental state. This exploration might delve into the amount of time she spent on Earth, her experiences as a superhero alongside the Justice League and Superman, and the reasons behind her apparent inebriation. The Woman of Tomorrow comics (which are the basis for the movie) start with Kara getting drunk at a bar and feeling lost and without direction. How does this align with the superheroine who makes an appearance (in silhouette) in Peacemaker?

The film adaptation of Supergirl provides an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into her character, addressing both her past struggles (trauma) and her heroic actions. Whether it clarifies her appearance in Peacemaker‘s Justice Gang or not, it aims to offer a more comprehensive insight into a character who promises to be one of the DCU’s most intricate superheroes.

Starting from Thursdays at 9pm Eastern Time, new episodes of “Peacemaker” Season 2 will be available exclusively on HBO Max. On June 26th, 2026, you can catch “Supergirl” in movie theaters.
