The latest episodes of Stranger Things season 5 have already given us some unforgettable scenes, with one episode standing out in particular. Fans are especially moved by one scene, which many are calling one of the most emotional and impactful in the whole series. There was some debate about what happened between the characters involved, but now we have a clear explanation of the scene and how it affects their relationship.
A pivotal scene happens in Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 6, “Escape from Camazotz.” It follows Nancy and Jonathan unintentionally triggering a major event that threatens to destroy the Upside Down. This leaves them stranded and facing a dire situation, and although a proposal happens, it’s actually a breakup. Some viewers were puzzled, but co-creator Matt Duffer confirmed to People that it was, definitively, a split.
The Duffer Brothers Reveal Why They Split One Of Stranger Things’ Longest-Running Couples

Jonathan and Nancy have been together for a while, starting around the end of season 2. While season 4 brought some difficulties for them, things really escalated in season 5, and they seemed to be growing apart. Splitting them up actually makes sense for the story, and the creators felt it was the best way to develop Nancy’s character.
Matt Duffer explained that the decision for Nancy to become independent and discover her own path wasn’t a single moment, but rather a shared feeling among him and the writers. They all believed it was important for her character to stand on her own.
You know, as a movie fan, I always appreciate when things feel real, and the Duffers really nailed that with this storyline. They pointed out, and it’s totally true, that most high school romances don’t last. I mean, think about it – how many of us actually end up with the person we dated back in high school? It felt honest, and that’s what made it work for me.
Honestly, I always rooted for them! I get why people thought they had a real connection – they’ve been through so much together. Even the Duffers, the show’s creators, acknowledged it. Matt said their relationship was more complicated than your average high school romance, and Ross actually called it a ‘trauma bond.’ It was really interesting to see Nancy and Jonathan realize that themselves during a super honest talk they had – it felt so real!
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is now available on Netflix. Both parts of the season will be released, with the finale streaming on New Year’s Eve.
