The Division 2’s Latest Season Brings New Escalation Difficulty, Prototype Gear, and More

The recent anniversary event was a good way to mark ten years of The Division 2, but the new season, Rise Up, looks even more promising. It’s available now on all platforms and introduces a new endgame challenge called Escalation. Players who have completed the story campaign and reached level 40 can access Escalation, which is currently featured in main missions and Strongholds. You can find it at the Base of Operations, near the Countdown area.

Escalation mode has ten difficulty levels, each changing the enemies and challenges you’ll face. It’s tougher than normal, with no mid-mission saves and a time limit. To try the harder levels, you’ll need Escalation Tokens, which you can earn by replaying missions. Be careful though – if you fail a mission, any tokens you used are lost permanently.

You’ll encounter different types of Mutators, each changing up the challenges. For example, Harvester restores enemy health and armor as they inflict damage, Suppressor builds up an EMP charge with every hit taken, and Anchor grants damage resistance while also providing enemies with incendiary rounds. These Mutators feel similar to the Greater Rifts in Diablo 3, so you’d expect there to be good rewards for overcoming them, wouldn’t you?

Prototype Gear is a new, powerful type of item. It features significantly improved stats—up to 1.5 times higher than before—and special enhancements called Augments. These Augments include effects like Echo, which can make a bullet deal damage twice, and Amalgam, which gives bullets a chance to inflict random effects. While not always dropped from Escalation Missions, completing higher-level missions increases your chances of finding these items, along with other valuable rewards.
