The Duffer Brothers Are Leaving Netflix After Stranger Things (And There’s a Big Reason Why)

It seems that the Duffer brothers are planning to depart from Netflix and join Paramount instead. According to Matthew Belloni’s report, this decision was primarily driven by Paramount’s theatrical film division, as Netflix reportedly declined to provide them with theatrical releases. However, their final project at Netflix will still be the highly anticipated fourth season of Stranger Things, which is set to premiere later this year on the streaming platform. During their tenure at Netflix, the Duffer brothers created Stranger Things and initiated the development of a spinoff series for the streaming service.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share some exciting news about the Stranger Things universe! Alongside the anticipated spinoff and animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, featuring a new character named Nikki Baxter, the Duffer brothers are also working on the stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This duo has been busy as well, with two other projects in development at Netflix. One of them is the supernatural series, The Boroughs, starring Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, and Denis O’Hare, set to debut next year. The second one is the horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, featuring Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco, also slated for a premiere next year. Can’t wait!

Before they started working at Netflix, the Duffer brothers had previously directed two short films named “We All Fall Down” and “Eater.” In 2015, they released their first and only feature film titled “Hidden,” which they also wrote. The cast included Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Emily Alyn Lind, and Heather Doerksen. Additionally, the Duffer brothers have written episodes for the television series “Wayward Pines” and “The Grounded.” As of now, it is unknown what their future projects might be; however, as reported by Deadline, any potential expansions to “Stranger Things” would be part of the Duffer brothers’ deal with Paramount.

The hit Netflix series, “Stranger Things,” joins forces like “Wednesday” and “Squid Game” in Netflix’s impressive lineup. However, with the Duffer brothers moving on from Netflix, a significant void is left in their programming. Yet, this departure offers the opportunity for the brothers to explore beyond television storytelling. Although they have only one feature film to their credit (for now), their work with Netflix has demonstrated their ability to create thrilling and immersive narratives. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures has predominantly achieved success in two distinct areas: small-screen adaptations of “Star Trek” and big-screen installments of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. However, recent ventures such as the adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” in 2025 indicate that Paramount is open to taking on more ambitious projects. Regardless of their future collaborations, expect them to be captivating events.

Starting now, you can only watch the initial four seasons of the Netflix hit show “Stranger Things” on Netflix itself. The fifth and concluding season of this popular series will release in three distinct parts this year. The first part of Season 5 is scheduled to debut on November 26th, followed by another part on December 25th, and the final part on December 31st. According to Netflix, every new volume will be available at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time.
