The Elder Scrolls 6 is “Progressing Really Well,” Says Todd Howard: “We Wish It Went A Bit Faster”

Fans are still waiting for news about a possible PlayStation 5 version of Starfield or any additional story content. With no updates on those fronts, attention has shifted to The Elder Scrolls 6. Unfortunately, even though it’s been over seven years since the game was first announced, director Todd Howard only confirmed that it’s still quite a ways from release.

Todd Howard recently shared an update with Game Informer about the development of The Elder Scrolls 6. He said progress is going well, and while most of the studio is currently focused on the new Elder Scrolls game, they’re used to working on multiple projects at once. They also spend a lot of time planning before they start full production, to ensure quality. Howard admitted everyone wants the game to come out sooner, but they’re committed to taking the time needed to get it right.

Design director Emil Pagliarulo confirmed the game is still in development, saying, “It’s going!” He explained that while players are eager to play, the studio doesn’t feel the same pressure internally. He understands this can be frustrating for those who are excited and waiting for the game.

Game development takes a significant amount of time, and delays are common. The recent postponement of GTA 6 was actually a wise decision. Games of this scale aren’t just lengthy to create, but also require extensive refinement and bug fixing before release.

Interestingly, Pagliarulo seemed a little sensitive when asked about how long the game has been in development. He argued that fans would prefer a polished, high-quality game, even if it takes longer to create, rather than a rushed product that doesn’t meet expectations. He used the analogy of a turkey needing enough time to cook properly, saying they’ll take as long as necessary to make the game great.

While it’s great to hear progress is being made, The Elder Scrolls 6 was originally announced way back in 2018. It took until August 2023 for the game to move beyond planning and actually begin development, and even then, early versions only started appearing in March 2024. Although rumors in July 2025 suggested a playable build existed after a leaked trailer, we still don’t have any idea when the game might actually be released.
