The Elder Scrolls Online is finally getting cross-play for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation — but don’t expect it to arrive soon

On Wednesday, ZeniMax Online Studios revealed a lot of details about the future of The Elder Scrolls Online. The game is moving to a seasonal format, and players can expect some significant changes over the next year.

I recently had a chance to ask questions to the team at ZeniMax Online Studios. Along with plans for updates throughout 2026, producer Susan Kath announced that cross-play is finally being developed for The Elder Scrolls Online, with a team specifically focused on making it happen.

Players have wanted cross-play for a while now, but it’s still quite a ways off. We don’t have any idea when it will be available – there’s no release date or even an estimated timeframe.

The Elder Scrolls Online launched on PC in 2014, and consoles followed in 2015. Because of this, the game wasn’t originally built to support cross-play, and the developers acknowledge it’s a complex challenge to add. Beyond the technical hurdles, they also need to consider how the feature will impact the player community.

Because The Elder Scrolls Online is played on different systems—Xbox, PlayStation, and PC/Mac—its player base is divided into separate communities and guilds for each platform.

A challenge worth tackling

Figuring out cross-play is a tough challenge for the team at ZeniMax Online Studios, but it’s a great addition that will significantly improve the game.

I’ve noticed that players really expect to be able to play with friends on different systems and carry their progress across platforms these days. It’s frustrating when you can’t, and honestly, I feel the same way – it’s a big deal to be able to take my characters and accomplishments with me, no matter where I’m playing.

The Elder Scrolls Online is going to see a lot of updates soon, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the game evolves in the coming months.

The Elder Scrolls Online is playable on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Mac. Plus, it’s part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription.
