The beginning of the end for Marvel’s Ultimate X-Men takes the story back to the very beginning
Issue #23 of Ultimate X-Men retells the story of the previous 22 issues, but this time from the perspective of Makoto Amano. Amano has been secretly observing and controlling events, driven by his desire for revenge against the X-Men and Shinoby Kageyama, also known as the Shadow King. He’s willing to sacrifice others to achieve his goals, seemingly without any concern for the cost to anyone but himself.

Marvel’s Ultimate X-Men #23 promises big reveals! The issue will finally explain what’s really been happening throughout the series, exposing secrets and twisting everything you thought you knew about the Ultimate X-Men.
I first encountered Makoto Amano in Ultimate X-Men #4 back in 2024. He was a mess, totally controlled by this seriously scary being called the Shadow King – the same one who messed with Shinobu Kageyama. After some awful experiments by this group called the Children of the Atom, he unlocked his mutant powers and basically went on a mission to wipe out both the cult and Kageyama himself. It was pretty intense!
Amano’s desire for revenge stemmed from the death of Tsubasa. Tsubasa, a friend of Hisako Ichiki (Armor), had been relentlessly bullied by Amano and others, ultimately leading him to suicide.
Similar to other titles in the Ultimate Universe, Ultimate X-Men is nearing its end, with the story concluding in Ultimate X-Men #24. The entire line is expected to finish with Ultimate Wolverine #16 and The Ultimates #24, both scheduled for release in April.
Deniz Camp, the writer who continued Jonathan Hickman’s work on the Ultimates, recently spoke about the series, saying it was a deeply meaningful project. He explained, “It’s hard to talk about it without getting emotional. It really is the culmination of everything Jonathan [Hickman] began.”
According to Camp, everything is coming together – ideas from my book and from others. He believes the result will be impactful and conclusive, filled with strong emotions and even loss. He describes it as an incredibly intense experience.
Marvel’s Dan Buckley explained that fans will be able to experience the entire story—from start to finish—and enjoy it for many years, sharing it with future generations.
Ultimate X-Men #23 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
