In April, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s fifth project together, titled “Sinners“, made a powerful impact at the box office and has since stood out as one of the notable films of 2025. Over the past ten days, the film has been released for home viewing on platforms such as HBO Max, followed by its eagerly awaited 4K physical release. Now that both the 4K and Blu-ray versions are available, fans can delve into the special features, which encompass a 30-minute documentary about the film’s production, along with 18 minutes of cut or extended scenes.
One of those sequences is actually an alternate portrayal of how the movie “Sinners” could have ended, hinting at director Coogler’s initial ideas for the film’s finale. However, it wouldn’t be accurate to label this as an “alternate ending” since the deleted scene shares similarities with the final version’s events. Instead, it presents a unique perspective on the ending we saw in the movie, editing it in a way that shifts the pace and subtly alters our interpretation of all the unfolding events.
If you decide to buy the 4K disc or Blu-ray (available here), you’ll notice that the final scene in the “Deleted Scenes” bonus feature displays an alternate ending. In this version, Sammie visits his father’s church during Sunday service, similar to the usual conclusion. But instead, when his father begins speaking to him and delivering a sermon, the footage shifts to Smoke at the juke joint, readying himself to confront the Klan members he suspects are approaching.
In my film critique perspective, the final act unfolds with an intriguing narrative twist: the preacher’s sermons on penitence and renouncing wickedness serve as a poignant backdrop for Smoke’s decisive retribution against the racists who sought to end his life.
In due course, as the action winds down, the scenes transition to depict an older version of Sammie, played by Buddy Guy, performing blues music at a club during the 1990s. This seamless portrayal serves as a concluding chapter for the Sinners storyline, tying all the elements together in a unified sequence.
It’s truly thrilling to watch the climax of Sinners this way, but Coogler indeed made a wise decision by going with the extended cut. Each scene on its own is simply remarkable, and swiftly transitioning between them seems to diminish their individual impact. The original (and more effective) ending allows each moment to unfold naturally, ensuring that every scene makes a lasting impression.
For those who’ve previously watched “Sinners”, this excised finale remains an engaging view, offering extra church-set scenes featuring Sammie and his father. In today’s scanty era of deleted footage, it’s fantastic that a cherished film like this provides nearly 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes content for enthusiasts to savor.
You can now buy or rent “Sinners” in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. It is available for digital purchase from platforms like Apple, Prime Video, and other on-demand providers.
