The Exorcist franchise set for all-new instalment 50 years since original film with record-breaking Hollywood A-lister

Scarlett Johansson will star in a new installment of The Exorcist, a horror series being reimagined by director Mike Flanagan.

According to Deadline, the actor—fresh off a successful relaunch of the Jurassic World series—was considered ideal for bringing The Exorcist franchise back to life after the disappointing performance of 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.

The upcoming movie won’t be a sequel to the previous one; it’s a fresh story within the world of The Exorcist, and details are still being kept under wraps.

Flanagan expressed his excitement about casting Scarlett Johansson in the new Exorcist film, praising her as a talented actress who consistently delivers believable and compelling performances, whether in smaller films or large-scale blockbusters.

This will be the seventh installment in the Exorcist franchise and the second film released since NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Blumhouse purchased the rights to the series for $400 million in 2021.

Mike Flanagan is widely recognized for his successful television work on Netflix, directing popular series like The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. He’s also directed several movies, including adaptations of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, as well as his recent film, The Life of Chuck.

This marks Johansson’s debut in a major horror film, though she previously explored similar unsettling themes in the critically praised 2013 film Under the Skin.

I’ve been so impressed watching Scarlett Johansson expand her talents! She just directed her first movie, ‘Eleanor the Great,’ which is amazing. And she’s been super busy on screen too – I loved her in the rom-com ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ and she was fantastic in Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ and ‘The Phoenecian Scheme.’
