The Expanse: Orisis Reborn Will Draw Inspiration From Persona 5 in How it Focuses on Characters

Earlier this month, Owlcat Games, known for role-playing games such as “Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous” and “Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader”, revealed their next big RPG project – “The Expanse: Osiris Reborn”. In a recent interview with CNET, creative director Alexander Mishulin shared some of the sources that influenced this upcoming game.

It’s not surprising that “The Expanse: Osiris Reborn” will be influenced by various role-playing games, including the Mass Effect series and Baldur’s Gate 3. However, Mishulin has disclosed that Persona 5 also played a significant role as an inspiration for the studio, particularly in how the game focuses on its characters within the storyline.

Mishulin stated that while we’re not directly borrowing elements from Persona 5, there is a resemblance in our approach, particularly in the focus on characters driving the narrative and their growth throughout the story right up to the conclusion, which mirrors somewhat.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, I get to embark on missions with not one, but two trusted companions by my side! And here’s an exciting twist revealed by Mishulin – during gameplay, there’s a chance you’ll encounter characters straight from the pages of the books or the screen of The Expanse TV show!

Mishulin stated that you’ll directly witness the outcomes of Holden’s actions, including incidents like The Canterbury, and observe how it impacts people across the belt and inner planets. Essentially, you’ll embark on your own journey with personal objectives, decisions, and outcomes within the same universe, where significant events will be happening concurrently with your storyline.

Apart from discussing other aspects, Mishulin mentioned that FromSoftware’s Souls series has been an inspiration due to its flexible character building systems. He explained, “The RPG system is quite open, enabling you to create any kind of character you desire.” This aligns with our game design philosophy of encouraging experimentation and personal preference. Additionally, the game doesn’t impose a rigid class system like some Souls-like games do.

A significant aspect of playing The Expanse involves portraying space as an ominous and inhospitable environment,” Mishulin clarified. This implies that gamers may encounter some hazardous elements that are inherent to navigating space within the realistic science fiction setting of The Expanse.

Previously, Owlcat Games confirmed that “The Expanse: Osiris Reborn” won’t follow the plot of the books or TV series. Instead, it will offer a unique storyline. Moreover, Mishulin mentioned that the studio isn’t aiming to create a AAA-level game. Instead, their primary objective is to deliver an engrossing environment where players can make decisions and experience the consequences.

In conversation with Alcon, Mishulin shared that they expressed a desire to explore and develop further narratives within the universe we were discussing, which aligned perfectly with our own vision. What we’re crafting now is a fresh tale that unfolds concurrently with all the book series and television show events.

The space opera “The Expanse: Osiris Reborn” will soon be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. At this time, though, an official launch date has not been announced.
