The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Showcases Space Gunfights, Mag-Boots and Food in New Early Gameplay

Since the next Mass Effect game isn’t expected for several years, many fans are looking to The Expanse: Osiris Reborn to satisfy their craving for a similar space adventure. So far, it’s proving to be a good fit, thanks to Owlcat Games’ commitment to realism – they even consulted with former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao on the details of living and working in space, including spacewalks.

A major concern for astronauts in space is drifting away, which is why they typically use tethers. However, that wouldn’t translate well to a fast-paced game like Osiris Reborn. According to Chiao, magnetic boots offer a good balance – they maintain a sense of realism while still allowing for quick reactions and movement.

Space drastically changes how guns perform, affecting things like kickback, bullet trajectory, and especially sound. While a truly realistic depiction would have almost no sound, the game aims for something in between. According to audio director Sergey Eybog, players will hear more than astronauts would in a vacuum, but much less than on Earth. The focus is on what the player feels – their character’s breathing, radio chatter, and the vibrations of the weapon – creating a sense of tension and dread that stays with you.

Life aboard the ship isn’t just about battles; everyday details, especially food, are crucial for creating a realistic experience. According to game design producer Yuliya Chernenko, space travel alters how things taste, and astronauts often long for strong flavors and spices to regain those sensations.

In Pinkwater, all the food is grown in space, so you’ll likely still hear people discussing meals and food. Maybe even whispers about getting hold of illegal spices to add some extra flavor to things?

It’s still early days, but we’re impressed with how Owlcat is translating the realistic, down-to-earth sci-fi of The Expanse into a video game. Currently, Osiris Reborn doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but it will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
