As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that I was part of the loop when Director Matt Shakman confirmed the collaboration of Joe and Anthony Russo in the production of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” During its grand premiere, Shakman opened up to Deadline about their partnership and emphasized that the First Family is a pivotal element in the upcoming Avengers event.
In this exhilarating journey, we’ll meet Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they make their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, all four characters are set to reappear in the Russo Brothers’ “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Before this epic crossover, “First Steps” will take us on an adventure through an alternate timeline where our beloved Fantastic Four must confront Galactus, voiced by Ralph Ineson, as the formidable antagonist. This is going to be one incredible ride!
Shakman expressed that they had a strong interest in our activities. They visited our production sets, observed scenes we were editing, and sought to familiarize themselves with the people involved in the story and script development,” said Shakman. “This way, when it was time for them to take over, these characters would be handled with care.
Doomsday.” In the upcoming MCU storyline, the First Family will encounter Robert Downey Jr., reprising his role as Doctor Doom, their classic adversary. Although specific details about “Avengers: Doomsday” are being kept secret, it’s anticipated that the film will explore conflicts arising from intersecting timelines, as it also features characters from the Fox-era X-Men. Since Doctor Doom has a significant connection to the Fantastic Four in the comics, the presence of the Russo Brothers on the “First Steps” set suggests that Marvel Studios is working diligently to create a more unified Phase 6 following challenges faced in previous MCU productions.
Ralph Ineson Hopes Galactus Will Meet Doctor Doom in the MCU
At the opening event, Ineson shared his thoughts about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Ineson admitted he wasn’t privy to any concrete plans by Marvel Studios, he expressed enthusiasm about potentially acting alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom, in a future project.
Ineson admitted, “I’m not sure about Kevin Feige’s and everyone’s plans, but I collaborated with Robert Downey Jr. a while back on ‘Dolittle,’ and he was nothing short of a courteous gent and top-notch actor. Working alongside him was a delight, so if the opportunity to work together again ever arises, absolutely, I would.
On various occasions, Doom and Galactus have come into contact within the Marvel Comics universe. The seminal storyline from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s 1966 Fantastic Four issues #57-60 established the basis for their longstanding rivalry. In this iconic narrative, Doctor Doom masterfully orchestrated a complex scheme to ensnare the Silver Surfer within his Latverian embassy. Utilizing his own sophisticated technology, Doom fashioned a device that compelledly drained the Power Cosmic from the Surfer, channeling it into his own physique. Certain aspects of this tale were loosely echoed in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but it is only now that the MCU is introducing both antagonists, opening up opportunities for a more faithful adaptation.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 25.
