In a dire predicament, the Fantastic Four find themselves grappling with trouble after their arch-nemesis, Doctor Doom, seized the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Among his initial acts was an underhanded scheme to “heal” The Thing by robbing him of his powers, which in reality also weakened the rest of the team’s abilities. The only feasible solution to thwart Doom lies in reinstating their powers, and this can be achieved by once more exposing Ben Grimm (The Thing) to cosmic rays, just as they were first imbued with these powers. The Fantastic Four have attempted various strategies, including venturing into alternative universes and traveling back in time to when they initially obtained their powers, but so far, all efforts have been futile. However, young prodigy Valeria Richards has devised a brilliant plan. If the team wishes to restore Grimm’s cosmic ray exposure, their most promising course of action is to trace the rays back to their origin – the Big Bang itself.
The Fantastic Jump Back to the Start Everything
The thought struck Valeria following their last effort to reinstate Ben’s abilities. The prospect of revisiting the initial explosion now seems utterly mad, and it indeed is. Reed underscores that no vessel could withstand even a second in that area without being instantly vaporized. This is why Valeria devises a strategy for them to remain there for an incredibly brief period – only a few nanoseconds.
The strategy involves time-traveling momentarily to expose The Thing to cosmic rays, then swiftly returning to the present before they transform into the first burnt toast of the universe. Sue will employ her remaining powers to erect a protective shield, and Johnny will absorb enough heat to keep everything intact. It’s a slim chance, but it’s their last resort to secure the power necessary to thwart Doom from dominating the world.
Absolutely, nanoseconds are far too brief for humans to react, so they’ll require a robotic pilot to guide them back safely. They choose their longtime buddy and robo-assistant HERBIE, who eagerly offers his assistance. To help him handle the task, they enhance HERBIE’s processing capabilities. The Four then board their ship, with Ben being advised by Reed that he isn’t required to go because he won’t be able to contribute like the others, thus potentially endangering only himself. However, Mr. Fantastic insists that he wouldn’t allow them to embark on such a risky mission without him. With their farewells said, they prepare for their shortest journey yet and ready themselves to return to where it all began.
1. The spacecraft lands at an incredibly tiny fraction of a second, precisely when our understanding of physics begins to apply. As intended, Ben is exposed to cosmic rays. However, when HERBIE attempts to bring everyone back to the current time, the time machine malfunctions. In slow motion, HERBIE discerns that the Big Bang had caused more damage to their vessel than expected, leaving them with mere nanoseconds before disintegration.
2. HERBIE, designed for such emergencies, rearranges the ship to transport only the five of them back to the present. But even this plan fails because they possess too much matter. Without a moment’s pause, HERBIE sends the others back and sacrifices himself, ensuring their survival. In his final moments, HERBIE, with his advanced intellect, comprehends the essence of love for the first time. He cherishes the Fantastic Four deeply, and in his final act of selflessness, he lays down his life to protect those dearest to him. Ultimately, HERBIE is consumed by the Big Bang, but the Fantastic Four return safely to their own era, with all their powers fully restored.
Everything’s Over, But There Are Still Questions
In the evening, Valeria and her father engage in a discussion about a topic causing concern for both: the origin of matter – baryogenesis. Most theories about the Big Bang suggest that matter and antimatter should have been equally produced, leading to their mutual destruction. However, for reasons yet unknown, matter persisted, giving rise to our universe. HERBIE and their time ship were an additional amount of matter created during this cosmic explosion. This realization leaves Valeria concerned, wondering if they could be the reason the universe exists at all. Reed reassures her, reminding her that when they recreated HERBIE from old data, the new version indicated that it would willingly sacrifice itself out of love. Reed surmises that there’s no way to know if their actions played a part in creating everything, but if they did, then the universe was born on a foundation of love – not such a terrible thought.
Essentially, the Fantastic Four could be key figures in the establishment of the Marvel Universe. It’s an enchanting tale that underscores their role in catapulting Marvel Comics to prominence. In a sense, they played a pivotal part in shaping the Marvel Universe, and they truly embody dedication and love.
