The Fantastic Four’s First MCU Villain Debut Creates A Problem 4 Years in the Making

Before the premiere of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, Marvel Studios introduced the initial villain from the Marvel Comics version of the Fantastic Four to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this introduction presents a challenge following the release of 2021’s “Eternals”. In their debut, Marvel’s First Family face off against Galactus and Shalla-Bal’s Silver Surfer, but this is not their first battle as superheroes in the MCU. Correspondingly, a comic book issue linked to the universe delves into the Fantastic Four’s origin story, revealing where they obtained their powers and detailing the adversaries they encountered during their early heroic escapades.

In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” comic book tie-in, the main superhero team, the Fantastic Four, confront Giganto on the streets of a 1960s-style, futuristic New York. This scenario echoes the Fantastic Four’s initial battle in Marvel Comics from 1961, where Giganto was unveiled as a Deviant Mutate – a result of experiments conducted by Deviant scientists employed by Kro. However, Marvel Studios slightly changed this storyline for the new comic by depicting Giganto as a Deviant himself, which ties back to the Deviants introduced in “Eternals,” but it causes some confusion due to discrepancies between the original and modified stories.

In Marvel Comics lore, the Deviants were a branch of early human civilization born from Celestial genetic tinkering a million years ago, which also led to the creation of the Eternals and Mutants. However, for the 2021 live-action “Eternals” movie by Marvel Studios, the backstory of the Deviants has been revised. The new narrative presents them as naturally occurring life forms crafted by the Celestials to safeguard Celestial seeds on chosen planets. The Eternals, in turn, were engineered as artificial beings, responsible for eradicating the Deviants when they became a threat due to their uncontrolled evolution. This reimagined history eliminates any possibility of the Deviants conducting experiments that led to the creation of Giganto within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In the comic tie-in for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Giganto is depicted as a Deviant, which suggests that the Eternals could be revisited in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects. It’s possible that the backstory of the Eternals and Deviants in the Earth 828 universe of “First Steps” more closely aligns with their comic book origins. Giganto, being the first Deviant we’ve seen in relation to the MCU since the end of “Eternals,” has added complexity to the already puzzling origin story of the Deviants in the MCU.

As a Marvel enthusiast, it’s still a bit of a mystery why Marvel Studios chose not to stay true to the origin story of the Eternals and Deviants when introducing these characters in the MCU. Their original tale was coherent, offering an ideal platform for the debut of the MCU’s upcoming Mutants. However, it appears we’ll have to hold on until Avengers: Secret Wars or possibly a later date to witness this storyline unfold. Unfortunately, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Giganto doesn’t take center stage as a live-action antagonist, although he does make a brief cameo. Despite his creation and origins being somewhat puzzling, Giganto remains an essential piece in the MCU’s rich history.
