Stephen King is a hugely successful storyteller. He’s famous for his many horror novels, but he’s also written in other genres, and a lot of his work has been turned into movies. While not every film adaptation has been great, many have been well-received by both audiences and critics. However, some adaptations have been major failures—a few have even received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, the first Stephen King adaptation to earn that incredibly low score is available to watch for free.
Currently available on Tubi, the 1990 horror film Graveyard Shift wasn’t successful when it was released in theaters. It earned only $11.6 million despite costing $10.5 million to make, and critics universally disliked it – it received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with no positive reviews. Based on a short story by Stephen King, the film was directed by Ralph S. Singleton and featured David Andrews, Stephen Macht, Kelly Wolf, and Brad Dourif.
Graveyard Shift is So Bad Even Stephen King Dislikes It

The movie Graveyard Shift follows John Hall, a newcomer who gets a job at a textile mill in Maine. The mill is built next to an old, flooded cemetery, which leads to a rat infestation and a series of mysterious deaths among the workers on the night shift. When the foreman orders a cleanup of the mill’s basement, the workers uncover something terrifying. While the movie is based on a solid early story by Stephen King, many feel it doesn’t live up to the source material – and King himself agrees. He’s even called it his least favorite adaptation, describing it as a cheap, exploitative film from the 1980s.
Although Graveyard Shift isn’t a perfect film, it’s surprisingly better than its reputation suggests – and much better than its low score on Rotten Tomatoes or even Stephen King’s own opinion of it. The movie effectively captures the working-class feel of King’s earlier work, reminding viewers that he understands the difficulties of having a tough job. Considering the unpleasant tasks the characters face, their need for a paycheck feels relatable. The film also looks genuinely gritty, using real rats and practical effects to create a gruesome and unsettling atmosphere. While the acting and story aren’t stellar, it’s still an enjoyable watch.
