Calling a science fiction action movie “perfect” is a strong statement, particularly for a sequel that took a decade to create. But that’s exactly what some are saying about Vin Diesel’s Riddick, which is becoming popular on streaming services as fans await the release of the fourth film, currently being finished.
Hitting theaters on September 6, 2013, Riddick is currently the third most popular movie on the free streaming platform, Tubi. It featured Diesel reprising his role of the titular anti-hero made famous in Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. This time around he was joined by the likes of Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Karl Urban, Jordi Mollà, and Matt Nable. Produced for $38 million (the bulk of which was funded by Diesel himself), the sequel managed to take in $98 million at the box office, making it a modest hit. Unlike its more ambitious predecessor, Riddick returned the franchise to its roots with a stripped-down survival story that once again reminded fans why Diesel’s morally gray hero became such an icon. The official synopsis reads:
Stranded and left to die on a harsh, sun-baked planet, the dangerous criminal Riddick must battle deadly alien creatures to stay alive. His chance of rescue lies in sending out a distress signal, but that attracts unwanted attention – a pair of mercenary ships. The first crew is particularly brutal, and the second is led by someone Riddick knows from his past. As time runs out, Riddick understands that neither group will let him escape alive; they both want him as a prize.
Although Riddick did well at the box office, opinions were sharply divided. Critics gave it a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences rated it even lower at 56%. Some viewers praised it as a perfect film, while others strongly disagreed, calling it everything from confusing to a cynical attempt to make money. This highlights how difficult it is to satisfy everyone’s tastes.
Vin Diesel Will Return in ‘Riddick: Furya’

Universal Pictures
Despite everything, the Riddick films have gained a dedicated fanbase over time. That’s why there’s a lot of excitement for the new fourth installment, Riddick: Furya, which has already finished shooting.
The highly anticipated sequel doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will delve into the backstory of Riddick, showing his return to his home world to face a new threat. Vin Diesel will once again work with director David Twohy, who helmed the previous three films. According to Twohy, the movie will be a sci-fi action thriller that finally reveals Riddick’s origins and answers long-standing questions about his past.
For years, our dedicated fans have been asking for another Riddick movie, and we’re excited to announce that it’s finally happening: Riddick: Furya! This film will take you back to Riddick’s home world, revealing his origins and how he became who he is.
