Comedy movies that playfully imitate other films were once very popular, but they’ve become less common recently. However, that looks like it might be changing! We’ve seen signs of a comeback with films like Spinal Tap II: The End Continues released last year, and Spaceballs 2 is now in production. The revival really started last summer with the new Naked Gun movie, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. It did well in theaters and is now a big hit on streaming services.
I was surprised to see that The Naked Gun is actually the most popular movie on Prime Video right now, according to FlixPatrol! It’s even beating out Sinners, which a lot of people think could win Best Picture. It’s pretty unexpected, but I’m definitely going to check it out!
Why The Naked Gun Is Worth Watching On Prime Video

It’s not unusual for movies that underperform in theaters to become popular on streaming services, and The Naked Gun is a perfect example. Released late in the summer, the reboot was surprisingly well-received, earning positive reviews and an impressive 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes – one of the highest in the series. Critics loved its over-the-top, silly humor, which felt true to the original Naked Gun films. What makes this reboot stand out is that it successfully balances honoring the franchise’s legacy with adding its own unique touch.
Liam Neeson was a major asset to The Naked Gun, and he fit the lead role perfectly. Known for his action movies, he clearly enjoyed the chance to playfully subvert that image in a comedy. It’s a welcome change of pace for audiences used to seeing him in more serious roles. The film really succeeds because Neeson manages to play it straight while still fully committing to the humor. His great chemistry with Pamela Anderson also adds a lot, making their scenes together especially funny.
Spoof comedies were hugely popular in the 1980s, with films like the original Naked Gun leading the way. Today, the new Naked Gun movie offers a refreshing change of pace. It stands out from many current releases, making it an easy recommendation for Amazon Prime subscribers. The film has tapped into something audiences were missing, proving there’s still a demand for classic, silly comedies. Its success is a good sign for upcoming spoofs like Spaceballs 2 and Scary Movie 6, and it might even mark the beginning of a comedy revival in theaters.
Now that The Naked Gun is doing well in theaters and online, Paramount might consider making more movies in the series. There’s definitely still a lot of interest in this kind of comedy, meaning there’s potential for more profit. However, comedy sequels are often hit-or-miss, and it could be smart to leave The Naked Gun as a classic rather than risk making a bad sequel. Still, if director Akiva Schaffer comes up with a great new idea, it might be worth exploring – he’s proven his comedic talent with both The Naked Gun and Popstar.
