Scott Derrickson’s horror movie, titled The Gorge, has made a remarkable record for Apple TV+. As reported by Deadline, it set a new milestone as the “largest film debut” ever on the streaming platform, surpassing the previous record held by last year’s movie Wolfs starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Although Apple did not disclose specific viewership data (like total hours streamed), they did reveal that The Gorge contributed to a “double-digit growth” worldwide for the streaming service and attracted +80% more new viewers from weekend to weekend. The film, which was not released in theaters, premiered on Apple TV+ on Friday, February 14th.
It’s been a delight for everyone at Apple to witness the extraordinary and innovative universe crafted by Scott in The Gorge strike such a powerful chord with audiences worldwide,” said Matt Dentler, head of features at Apple Original Films. “Taking this exhilarating, genre-blending journey together with our partners at Skydance has been an utter pleasure, and we can’t wait to see more viewers being captivated by the on-screen enchantment of Miles and Anya’s performances.
In this thrilling adventure titled “The Gorge“, Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy portray two operatives tasked with maintaining vigil over opposing sides of an enormous chasm for a year, preventing sinister forces lurking below from wreaking havoc on the surface. The twist is that they are prohibited from communicating during this mission. Yet, in their efforts to find covert methods of communication, they develop a heartwarming connection before events take a harrowing turn.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’ve got to say that “The Gorge” truly left an impression! With a 64% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that this film struck a chord with many. The intriguing dynamic between Teller and Taylor-Joy’s characters was undeniably captivating, and the heartwarming love story at the movie’s core touched the hearts of viewers. In an exclusive chat with ComicBook, writer Zach Dean even hinted at the possibility of a sequel or prequel, potentially kickstarting a whole franchise!
In terms of its unique genre mix, “The Gorge” appears to be a compelling idea for a cinematic experience. Yet, it appears that Apple made a wise decision by releasing the film directly on their streaming platform instead. If “The Gorge” were to play in theaters, it could have easily been overshadowed amidst other releases; it definitely wouldn’t have dethroned “Captain America: Brave New World” as the top-grossing movie at the box office. By opting for a streaming release, the film had a better chance to thrive and find success. It was able to attract a substantial home audience, adding another feather to Apple’s cap this month. The news of “The Gorge” breaking records arrives on the heels of “Severance” becoming Apple TV+’s most-watched television show ever.
After the success of “The Gorge”, it’s intriguing to watch if Dean’s ideas for future projects will materialize. Interestingly, Apple had previously considered making a sequel to “Wolfs”, but director Jon Watts opted out. Consequently, there’s a chance that “The Gorge” could evolve into a flagship series on the streaming platform instead. This is also beneficial for Derrickson, as it strengthens his position to explore more prospects at Apple if he needs a new creative home after completing “The Black Phone 2”.
