The Greatest Crime Mystery of All Time Just Returned to Paramount+

Streaming services got a big update on Saturday morning, with lots of new shows and movies becoming available. As always at the start of a new month, Paramount+ added a bunch of titles on November 1st—dozens of films, in fact. Among the new additions is a highly acclaimed crime drama, often considered one of the best noir films ever made.

As a film buff, I was thrilled to see Chinatown back on Paramount+! This 1974 Jack Nicholson masterpiece is, in my opinion, one of the greatest noir and detective films ever made. It’s been missing from the streaming service for a while, but thankfully it returned on November 1st, giving everyone another chance to experience this truly iconic movie.

The film Chinatown is a captivating detective story following Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), a private investigator who uncovers a complex and perilous conspiracy in Los Angeles. What sets Chinatown apart from typical noir films, often characterized by darkness and shadows, is its use of bright, sunny Los Angeles as its setting. This unusual choice doesn’t just stand out visually, it also creates a sense of unease and disorientation that perfectly complements the film’s twisting plot.

We won’t give away the ending, but Chinatown is famous for its shocking and depressing finale. The film takes an unexpected turn in its last few moments, offering a resolution that isn’t satisfying in the way you might hope, but feels true to the story. Even now, the final line – “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.” – is considered one of the most iconic closing lines in movie history.

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the film Chinatown, and Paramount released a beautifully restored 4K version. While the version available on Paramount+ looks good, the physical 4K disc is even better. If you prefer owning movies on disc, this release is worth finding.

What’s New on Paramount+?

As a film critic, I have to say that November 1st was a great day for Paramount+ subscribers. While Roman Polanski’s Chinatown is arguably the biggest and best addition to their library, it wasn’t the only one. They also added some real classics like Starship Troopers, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, plus all four Indiana Jones films directed by Steven Spielberg! If you want to see everything that landed on the service that day, check out the complete list below.
