As a movie critic, I have to say that the opening to Batman Begins still stands alone. While Marvel and DC have given us a lot of memorable opening moments over the years – everything from great character introductions to huge action set-pieces – nothing quite matches that initial scene for me. It really sets the stage for what’s to come, and honestly, most superhero films are judged by whether they can deliver that same impact right from the start.
Action movies rely heavily on grabbing the audience’s attention right away, and many do a great job. The opening bank robbery in The Dark Knight is often cited as a particularly memorable example. However, one opening scene still stands out as exceptional, even after all this time.
X2: X-Men United Still Has The Best Superhero Movie Opening Scene Of All Time
X2: X-Men United immediately grabs your attention with an incredible action scene. It features Nightcrawler teleporting into the White House, causing chaos as Secret Service agents try to intercept him. This sequence is visually stunning and showcases Nightcrawler’s unique abilities in a way that hadn’t been done before in a superhero film.
Back in 2003, the combination of real stunts and visual effects in the film was incredibly impressive. Nightcrawler’s teleportation was shown using swirling smoke and quick camera work, which made it feel fast, chaotic, and unpredictable. The way these teleportations were planned and executed made each one seem purposeful – he’d appear behind enemies, on walls, or even hanging upside down, then vanish immediately.
Although the bank robbery scene in The Dark Knight is also incredibly memorable, the attack featuring Nightcrawler still feels a bit more impressive. This is because the sequence remains both creative and exciting, even now. It’s a fantastic action scene, and it also brilliantly showed how superpowers could be realistically brought to life on film.
Beyond Spectacle, The Nightcrawler Scene Perfectly Introduces The Movie
The Nightcrawler scene isn’t just visually impressive; it skillfully introduces the main story and ideas of X2. The attack on the White House immediately creates the political conflict that fuels the rest of the film, and quickly makes the challenges in this sequel much bigger than those in the first X-Men movie.
The opening scene sets up the main conflict: William Stryker’s plan to control mutants. We soon learn that Nightcrawler was unknowingly part of a bigger plan, suggesting powerful people are pulling the strings. This immediately connects the exciting beginning to the film’s central story.
As a huge X-Men fan, I always thought the opening of X2: X-Men United was brilliant. It really hits on one of the biggest ideas in the whole series – how people fear and misunderstand mutants, and what happens because of that fear. The way they show someone seemingly attacking the President is a really smart move, because it immediately makes you think about how quickly public opinion could turn. Honestly, in those first few minutes, the movie gives you amazing action, a compelling story, and a lot to think about – it’s just a perfect example of how a superhero movie should start!
