I was so excited to hear that Julia Donaldson, the amazing author behind The Gruffalo, is writing a brand new story featuring him! Apparently, we’re also going to meet a completely new character, which is fantastic news for any Gruffalo fan like me. I can’t wait to see what she’s come up with!
I’m so excited for the next book in the Gruffalo series! It’s called ‘Gruffalo Granny’ and will be the third story about the Gruffalo and all his friends and family. It’s currently planned to come out in September, and I can’t wait to read it!
As previously, it will be illustrated by long-term collaborator, Axel Scheffler.
Donaldson revealed plans for a new book during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on February 6th. She explained that writing a sequel is always difficult, and while she’d had the idea for about twenty years, she’d been busy with other projects. She also hinted that becoming a grandmother recently inspired her to finally start writing it.
Scheffler explained that he’d maintained for over two decades there wouldn’t be a follow-up, a stance that taught him a valuable lesson about not ruling things out. He was completely surprised when Julia presented a fantastic story idea that really sparked his interest.

The Fox, Snake, Owl and Mouse will all return for the sequel.
We’ve learned one line from the story: “The Gruffalo said to his daughter one day, your Gruffalo Granny is coming to stay.”
The Gruffalo was first published in 1999, with The Gruffalo’s Child following five years later.
In 2009, Magic Light Pictures adapted the story into a short film for the BBC, featuring a well-known cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Rob Brydon, and James Corden.
The film would go on to be nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.
The Gruffalo’s Child was adapted in 2011 with the same cast returning.
The Gruffalo’s Granny will be released on 10th September 2026. You can pre-order it here.
