The Guest ending explained: What did Ria discover about Fran?

Enjoy watching the entire new BBC suspense series, “The Guest,” now streaming on BBC iPlayer! The story revolves around Ria, portrayed by Gabrielle Creevy, who takes up a cleaning job for the mysterious entrepreneur Fran, played by Eve Myles.

At the climax of the initial episode, a startling occurrence unexpectedly links the two protagonists. However, Fran’s intentions remain enigmatic across the series. It isn’t until the final episode that everything becomes crystal clear.

What did Ria find out about Fran?

Ria discovered that she was enlisted in a strategy previously used by Fran multiple times. This tactic consisted of attracting young women, offering them cleaning jobs initially, and subsequently advancing them to assistant positions.

Mike could similarly be relied upon to welcome them too, much as he had done with Ria and her former counterpart, Anna. However, his unfortunate demise was reportedly a result of him deviating from the planned script under the influence of cocaine.

After Fran manages to earn their confidence and makes them dependent on her, she exploits this trust by involving them in laundering illicit funds derived from drug sales.

In this setup, the business functioned in such a way: Simon, Fran’s spouse, imported prescription drugs; Fran organized these drugs, and Richard took charge of selling them primarily to “bored housewives” and “weekend-loving middle-class office workers.” After making sales, the cash was sent to Dubai where it was exchanged for cryptocurrency.

The assistants would temporarily take on tasks to make some extra cash before moving on, but Fran viewed it as an opportunity for her to contribute, aiding other women in advancing both economically and socially.

Instead, it was claimed by Fran that Anna had been taking things from them, leading possibly to her being murdered, either by Simon or Richard.

What did Fran do?

At the end of The Guest, Ria awoke with the belief that she was responsible for killing Fran’s husband, Simon. However, it is eventually revealed that Fran was the one who had actually taken Simon’s life.

Due to Simon’s abuse, Fran found it necessary to have a private space where she could retreat and secure herself from his anger and violence. Tragically, on the night he perished, Simon was causing her harm and making threats against her when she defended herself and ultimately ended his life.

Initially, she secretly drugged Ria, staged evidence by putting the murder weapon in her possession, effectively accusing her of a crime she didn’t commit. On the run, Ria uncovered the truth about the whole ordeal. Yet, before she could reveal it all, Richard stepped in to thwart her plans, aiming to suppress the operation’s exposure.

At a safe place, Ria and Fran ultimately settled their differences and shared deeply with each other. When Ria started crying, Fran revealed that she identified with Ria. This is why she offered Ria the position and the chance for growth.

In a dangerous turn of events, Richard attempted to harm Ria by poisoning her. However, just in the nick of time, Fran intervened by striking Richard forcefully on the head using a bowl. This action enabled Ria’s escape from danger, giving her the opportunity to flee safely.

Where did we leave Ria and Fran?

Approximately two weeks following Ria’s escape, a broadcast reported that Fran was evading the authorities, as their illicit drug business had been uncovered and Fran was suspected of being involved in Simon’s homicide.

It was stated by Sharla that Richard would presumably serve a prison sentence for the length of his life. Contrastingly, Ria was found entirely innocent.

Meanwhile, Lee had got himself a job, and Ria was planning a backpacking trip abroad.

Towards the finale of the series, Ria was handed a coded message, which turned out to be a digital wallet filled with cryptocurrencies, originally stored in Richard’s safe, representing the profits from their joint venture.

In this situation, when Ria was loading the device, she followed Fran’s suggestion to grab as much as possible. As the screen displayed figures in the hundreds of thousands (probably millions), she flashed a smile because she realized she had just set up a promising new path for herself.
