The new factual drama, The Hack, launched tonight with appearances from many well-known faces, hinting at who the enigmatic Mr. Apollo might be – a role eventually played by Adrian Lester.
A mysterious source, who stayed anonymous, was a key connection for journalist Nick Davies (played by David Tennant). This person provided crucial information that helped Davies uncover the phone-hacking scandal.
Davies has always kept the identity of his source a secret, calling them only ‘Mr. Apollo.’ This mysterious figure inspired the creators of ‘The Hack’ to playfully introduce the character with the help of several famous celebrities.
Nick secretly meets with Mr. Apollo at a luxurious location in London, and directly addresses the audience to acknowledge that people are starting to figure out their true identities.
The scene is a funny series of quick visits, where Tennant’s character, a reporter, answers the door to various TV stars, immediately pointing out how unrealistic they are. Finally, Adrian Lester appears as the character Apollo.
The skit will feature comedian Harry Hill, who was surprisingly guessed, along with TV presenter Konnie Huq, sports journalist Gabby Logan, and chat show host Jonathan Ross.

Williams recalled that a few weeks before filming began, director Lewis Arnold simply asked him to find four celebrities. That was the entire direction he received, he explained.
We investigated who might be involved in the situation and called on some contacts for help. Luckily, we found four amazing people who were willing to assist us, and we couldn’t have asked for better support.
Spence added that he hopes the project comes across as fun and lighthearted, but also demonstrates the incredible cast’s enthusiasm for sharing this story with the world. He felt the quality of the casting reflects everyone’s desire to be involved.
Everyone contributed, whether it was with a quick funny appearance or a significant role.
He finished by saying he believes Jonathan Ross and other public figures were eager to participate in acknowledging that a mistake had been made and to add their voices to the discussion about it.
Viewers will see many returning characters throughout the seven episodes of The Hack, not just the ones already mentioned.
Robert Carlyle, Toby Jones, Katherine Kelly, and Eve Myles will star alongside David Tennant. Steve Pemberton will play Rupert Murdoch and Dougray Scott will portray former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in supporting roles.
When it came to casting, I think Williams really nailed it with Scott – he was exactly what they needed. And what I found interesting about Pemberton playing Murdoch is that he’s actually younger than the real guy was during that period, but he didn’t mind the makeup they used to age him up. It’s a really smart choice that sets him apart from other actors who’ve taken on the role.
No doubt that’s what nine seasons of Inside No. 9 will do for you!
The Hack is available to stream on ITVX. New episodes air Wednesdays on ITV1.
