Supergirl may be inspired by Tom King’s epic Woman of Tomorrow series, but even the DCU couldn’t adapt everything. We’re in the final build-up to Supergirl‘s release, and the upcoming blockbuster looks more exciting with every clip. The newest Supergirl footage showcased Kara Zor-El’s powers, as well as Jason Momoa’s Lobo.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, writer Ana Nogueira revealed she had to cut a lot of content from her work. She said the hardest part was removing a panel featuring the Psychedelic Dragon, which she described as “really beloved and gorgeous.” She particularly lamented cutting the scene with the Red Kryptonite and the Dragon, calling it “just like gorgeous.”
She also pointed out that other elements were left out. Someone had asked if the show would feature dinosaurs, and the creator responded that they hadn’t planned to include them. While Supergirl is impressive, it appears we won’t see things like psychedelic dragons or dinosaurs – the initial concept art, inspired by an X-Men comic, actually showed Supergirl riding a Phoenix-like creature.
This Epic Supergirl Scene Will Be Dearly Missed
Nogueira is correct to highlight this memorable moment from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It occurs in the second issue, where Supergirl’s spaceship is attacked by a karpane dragon. At this point, Supergirl has lost her powers after spending too long near a red sun, so she uses red kryptonite to regain them. As Kara explains, this particular type of kryptonite causes people to experience visions of transformation, and for Kryptonians, those visions actually become reality.
The artwork was amazing – Kara Zor-El transformed into a phoenix-like creature and successfully fought off a dragon. However, despite being visually impressive, this scene didn’t really contribute to the core story of the comic; it felt like an extra, mythical moment. While cool in a comic, it wouldn’t have worked in a movie and would have been unnecessary. As beautiful as the image is, it’s best to leave it out. Similarly, the dinosaurs would have just complicated the plot and made the story feel drawn-out.
Nogueira’s casual remark reveals how much the team enjoyed working on King and Evely’s miniseries. She still remembers the scenes she had to leave out, even after all these years. This suggests the parts they did keep will be exceptionally well-done in the final film.
