The most formidable competitor to the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series might be an offshoot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, teased during Phase 5’s Ironheart. Recently, HBO’s new Harry Potter series has commenced filming, presenting Dominic McLaughlin as the latest Boy Who Lived and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The first season is slated for release in 2027, potentially coinciding with the premiere of a supernatural MCU spinoff (though not yet officially confirmed) that could challenge the Harry Potter reboot’s popularity.
In the Marvel Television series “Ironheart,” we were introduced to Zelma Stanton (Regan Aliyah), who showcased her abilities when analyzing a mysterious artifact and upgrading Riri Williams’ (Dominique Thorne) Ironheart suit with sorcery. This debut has sparked theories that Marvel Studios might develop a spinoff centered around the Strange Academy, a magical school in the comics led by Stanton and Doctor Strange. If produced for the MCU, this Strange Academy series could serve as an exciting counterpart to HBO’s revamped “Harry Potter” adaptation.
Both Strange Academy and Harry Potter share a common theme where young magic users are discovering their abilities while navigating tricky predicaments. The resemblance between these stories is striking, making it intriguing to imagine Strange Academy leveraging the fame of the Harry Potter series, and Harry Potter gaining from Marvel Studios creating its own magical series within the MCU. In February, Deadline announced that an MCU series based on Strange Academy had been postponed, but the triumph of Ironheart and the progress of Harry Potter could potentially alter this situation.
It’s fair to say that the Harry Potter franchise is much more widely recognized than Strange Academy, which made its debut in Marvel Comics with the release of Strange Academy #1 in March 2020. This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a rivalry, but given the massive appeal and influence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a Strange Academy series could potentially give Harry Potter a run for its money as a formidable competitor. With actors like John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Anton Lesser, and others featured in Harry Potter, it’s expected to be a high-caliber and legitimate adaptation, despite facing some criticisms. A Strange Academy spinoff could also attract some notable names.
Actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Regan Aliyah, Anthony Ramos, Xochitl Gomez, Benedict Wong, and others might feature in a potential “Strange Academy” series. It’s exciting to envision fresh young sorcerers joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through this series. Unlike the well-known narrative of “Harry Potter,” “Strange Academy” could offer unique, outlandish, and vivid tales that are yet unexplored. As of now, a “Strange Academy” show has not been officially announced, but given the speed at which “Harry Potter” is progressing, it seems logical for Marvel to accelerate its plans for a magical journey of their own.
