HBO Max’s new Harry Potter series is doing something the original movies didn’t – and it’s a positive change. The original films were hugely popular, thanks in part to the fantastic British actors cast as the professors and other adult characters. Author J.K. Rowling insisted on casting British talent for those roles. But the new series isn’t bound by that same rule, which allows for a fresh approach to casting and opens up exciting possibilities.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was really surprised to hear that John Lithgow is going to be playing Dumbledore in the new HBO Max series! It’s a fantastic casting choice, but what’s even more interesting is that he’s the first American actor to ever take on one of the main Hogwarts characters. Apparently, J.K. Rowling originally wanted British actors for all the roles, so this is a pretty big change!
Harry Potter is Finally Hiring Non-Europeans, And This is a Good Thing

During the initial casting for the Harry Potter films, J.K. Rowling insisted that all actors be British. Chris Columbus, the director of the first movie and the person who assembled the original cast, explained that this wasn’t a suggestion – it was a firm rule he couldn’t bend. He even said he couldn’t allow his own daughter to have a speaking role, even a small one, unless he promised she’d remain silent. She ultimately played Susan Bones, one of the first students sorted, but had no lines. According to Columbus, the rule was simple: if an actor wasn’t British, they weren’t allowed to speak.
Fortunately, things are different now. The original films had a fantastic cast of British actors, but the new HBO Max series isn’t bound by the same rules set by J.K. Rowling. For example, John Lithgow, an American actor based in New York, is playing Dumbledore. Although he trained at a London drama school, he’s still American, which marks a clear change in direction for the series.
The original cast was already excellent, featuring actors like Richard Harris, Warwick Davis, and Maggie Smith, so the series didn’t need American actors. However, the HBO Max series’ choice to include actors from various backgrounds has broadened casting possibilities. While most of the cast remains British and European, having actors like John Lithgow join the franchise is a welcome change. Importantly, the three main young leads – Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron) – are all European, with roots in Scotland, London, and Manchester respectively.
Robin Williams Wanted to Be in Original Harry Potter Movies

According to casting director Janet Hirshenson (via ITM), Robin Williams was very eager to play Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and even contacted director Chris Columbus directly. Despite being a huge star and an Academy Award winner for Good Will Hunting, Columbus had to turn Williams down. Ultimately, he chose Robbie Coltrane for the part.
According to Hirshenson, the filmmakers had a strict rule of only casting British actors, which was a significant decision. So much so, that even Robin Williams was rejected for the role of Hagrid after expressing strong interest. Once they’d turned him down, they weren’t going to consider anyone else for the part – that was certain.
Robin Williams openly discussed his desire to be in the Harry Potter films, and he criticized J.K. Rowling’s policy of not casting American actors. He even tried out for a role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but director Alfonso Cuaron couldn’t make it happen. The preference for British actors ultimately led to David Thewlis being cast, though director Chris Columbus later admitted Williams would have been excellent in the part.
