The new Harry Potter TV series is taking some creative liberties with the original movies and books. The first trailer from HBO shows a show that feels a bit more grown-up, even though the characters are still young. We can expect to see more of Dumbledore’s search for Horcruxes than we did in the books, and the series will actually show Harry, Ron, and Hermione attending classes at Hogwarts. Plus, we’ll get a closer look at Harry’s life with the Dursleys at Number 4, Privet Drive.
The new Harry Potter TV series will benefit from being a longer format, allowing the story to unfold more fully. This is a key strength of television, and it should create a richer, more immersive experience of the wizarding world. Interestingly, this thorough approach could also set the stage for successful spin-off shows down the line, as everything will be carefully built from the beginning. But perhaps the most compelling change isn’t about the magic itself – it’s the focus on Harry’s life before he went to Hogwarts.
The First Harry Potter Trailer Shows a Lot of Harry’s Life Before Hogwarts
The initial teaser for HBO’s Harry Potter series focuses heavily on Harry’s life with the Dursleys. This makes sense, as the series isn’t due out until Christmas and the visual effects for the magical elements are still in progress. Scenes filmed at the Dursleys’ home, Hogwarts, and locations like the London Underground are likely finished, so it seems HBO showcased what they had completed so far.
This is a clever move, too. The Harry Potter story follows a traditional pattern where you first need to clearly show the world the characters live in. Then, you introduce the adventure – in this case, the invitation to Hogwarts – and the amazing new reality Harry discovers. The more we understand Harry’s life before Hogwarts, the more meaningful his journey becomes. The trailer shows we’ll be seeing much more of the Dursleys than we did in the movies, and that’s a really good decision.
The Dursleys Look Like Much Better Characters in the Harry Potter TV Show

The Dursleys in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone aren’t fully developed characters; they’re more like simple, exaggerated figures. J.K. Rowling intentionally created them this way for a children’s audience, similar to the wicked stepmothers in Cinderella. Their sole purpose is to make Harry’s life difficult, which motivates his journey to find happiness and acceptance at Hogwarts. While the films also emphasized this, both the books and movies had trouble when they tried to give the Dursleys more depth, as Rowling found it hard to move beyond their original, one-dimensional portrayal.
It’s amazing seeing how they’re adapting the story now that we know everything that happens! The writers and creators can really play with subtle clues about the Dursleys from the very beginning, because they already know all their secrets. I was really impressed with how they portrayed No. 4 Privet Drive – it feels much more realistic than the movies, like a typical home for a family trying to climb the social ladder in 1990s Britain. Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia is fantastic, especially in the trailer scene where she’s cutting Harry’s hair. It seems like a small moment, but as a book fan, I instantly recognized it – Harry’s hair always grows back overnight as a little bit of magic, a way of him rebelling!
The Harry Potter trailer highlights the scene with Petunia as having a deeper meaning. She’s desperately trying to suppress Harry’s magical abilities, but magic is simply a natural part of who he is and fights back against her efforts. This tension builds to a disturbing moment where she aggressively holds scissors near Harry’s face, insisting he’s ordinary. Emily Powley delivers a fantastic performance, convincingly portraying Petunia’s growing frustration and underlying anger. While she might believe she’s protecting Harry, her actions are clearly misguided.
Dudley Dursley’s Story Looks More Exciting Too

Amos Kitson’s portrayal of Dudley Dursley is also very strong. This version of Dudley is a young, spoiled child who bullies others because he’s actually insecure. The series seems to be emphasizing the relationship between Harry and Dudley early on, and we see a longer scene of Dudley tormenting Harry – chasing him through school with his friends. This scene hints at how Dudley will develop as the story progresses, making him feel like a more believable character.
It’s not meant as a negative comment about the films – movies naturally have less time to tell a story than TV shows, so it makes sense they focused on the magical aspects of Hogwarts. However, a TV series allows for more in-depth character development, a fuller exploration of themes, and a richer creation of the world itself. And this new Harry Potter TV adaptation looks incredibly promising.
